Default Make a "best of latter-day Van Halen" compilation

    Van Halen songs available:
    * "Humans Being"
    * Two bonus tracks on Best Of Volume I
    * Van Halen III
    * Three bonus tracks on The Best of Both Worlds
    * "That's Why I Love You" - the leaked song from the VHIII sessions

    Other songs available:
    * Eddie & Alex Van Halen's "Respect the Wind"
    * Eddie Van Halen's "Rise" and "Catherine" from Sacred Sin

All of Van Halen's albums are 9-12 songs long. Most are 9-11, I think only one of them reached 12 tracks not including VHIII?

So, make a 9-11 song album from the 22 available in that "pool". Lets see what people come up with!

Can I make it an EP?

    Me Wise Magic
That's Why I Love You (it was actually an official song on the Japanese import version of VHIII)

Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

oooh, interesting thread...'cuz after the 3 or 4 songs that will easily make EVERYONE'S compilation, coming up with another 5-6 for a mini "best of" is quite nearly impossible from this era.

But, with a couple of liberties extended my way, in order:

    1) Humans Being
    2) Without You
    3) Me Wise Magic
    4) That's Why I Love You
    5) Year to the Day - *preferably a "live" extended solo version
    6) Respect the Wind - *edit the song down to around 2:30 in length
    7) Learning to See
    8) Fire in the Hole - *fade in the intro snippet over the last chords of LTS
    9) From Afar
    10) Can't Get This Stuff No More
    11) Catherine - *fade in at 1:17 - fade out at 2:18 (ala "Growth")

Now, if there's ANY way possible of re-recording "Dirty Water Dog" with Ed's normal guitar tone and "grittier", more DLR-sounding vocals, then DWD INSTANTLY goes in at #9a.

(DWD is such an interesting song musically and lyrically, but for the life of me, I CANNOT get past the squanky guitar tone)

I kinda assumed some stuff like Humans Being would get on most, but thought the others people came up with could be pretty interesting.

The idea of live songs is kinda interesting too. I keep meaning to put together a bootleg compilation featuring the best versions of all the VHIII tracks the band played live on the III tour.

The only track on my list would be "Humans Being".

...I'm certainly not worthy of making the following statement, BUT...

Give me a couple of weeks with the masters of "everything else" and ONE-FIFTH the playing ability, and it would be a whole new ball game...

(by no means is this a comment on MY skills...more on how much raw musicality without ANY production value what so ever there is on VHIII)

...but we already knew that, didn't we?...

Agreed. I'm a hack, and I think I could have arranged and produced the songs better than the final product.

There is a reason that a great producer is highly sought after. They do make a difference: hint to Ed in case he wants to do it himself again. And please don't let Dave get next to the knobs! Skyscraper is a sonic trainwreck.
