Default The Official 90's Female Rock Band Thread

We don't show enough to love to the likes of Veruca Salt, Tracy Bonham, the Breeders, Belly, Concrete Blonde, Juliana Hattfield and others.

I for one am a HUGE fan of ALL of the above. I was fortunate enough to see Veruca Salt a couple years ago and I had an incredible time.

I have a Pandora station centered around these awesome bands and I passionately encourage all who haven't check them out to do so...there are very very few things as sexy as a good looking girl who plays fuzzed out melodic rock and roll.

The early-to-mid-nineties were an amazing time for music...ahhhh...good times!

What about that "I Hate My Sister" song? Was that by Juliana Hatfield?

Saw Eve's Plumb in a bar in the early 90's and met the lead singer. Very hot, and the band put on a great show. In a strange turn (or maybe not), the lead singer ended up being know later as the pop singer "Vitamin C".

Eve's Plumb "biggest" CD, Cherry Alive, is pretty good.

    Eve's Plumb

    Wiki says:

Eve's Plum was a rock band that originated in 1991. They released two albums and numerous singles in the early and mid-1990s, before disbanding in 1998.

Ben Kotch and his twin brother Michael had been looking to start a band and needed a singer and bassist. After Colleen Fitzpatrick met Michael while both were in school at New York University, she eventually became the group's singer; the band went through several bass players. The band's name was derived from actress Eve Plumb, best known as Jan Brady from The Brady Bunch.

I've seen Veruca Salt several times, the first on New Year's Eve 94/95 at Double Door. It was an awesome show. Their only album was just starting to take off and for their show they did every song on the album. Good times...

I've seen them three or four other times. They rocked until Nina Gordon left around '98. She had a solo career w/Warner for a time. Her first album had a few OK songs on it and I saw her solo at The Park West. She was OK; not like the old rockin' days of Veruca Salt.

As an aside, there is (or was -- it may now be closed) a clothing store here in Chicago called "Veruca Salt" -- http://www.shopverucasalt.com/about/.

Saw Belly at Peabody's Down Under during their debut album tour... great small club show. Bought a purple tour shirt with the Belly logo on the chest, which drew more attention to my beer gut than the band, when ever I wore it. Not so great.

Mary's Danish was one of my obsessions in the 90's. Think I saw them once also, at Peabody's Down Under.

Also, what about the chick-fronted band Chick? Their only album "Someone's Ugly Daughter" seriously rocked. They had one relatively hit single: "Malibu."

I used to really be into Garbage. I still think they're pretty good, Shirley is smokin for sure.

wow! Cool to see so much love for this era!

Hole definitely had some good tunes...Doll Parts and Celebrity Skin are my two favourites. I can't stand courtney love and I consider her a no-talent loser BUT she did surround herself with enough talent that Hole did create some good stuff.

Garbage is AWESOME. I haven't seen them live but I love everyone of their records.

The most recent Veruca Salt record is really really good. Anyone who walked away after Nina left is missing out...it's definitely not the same without her, but the band has carried on and made some good stuff.

Digging through my chest of drawers (approximately 800 cassette tapes acquired mostly in the 90's) I came across another favorite.

Throwing Muses (I believe there was a Belly or Breeders connection with these gals.)

The Breeders were cool though Kim Deal will always be a Pixie. For my money, L7 were the best female band of the era. Cool songs with attitude for days. And, of course, I have to tip my hat to Donnita Sparks for throwing her used tampon to a heckling crowd. Very gross. Very memorable.
