It is a beautiful guitar, but I can't see paying Made in USA prices for a Made in Mexico guitar. But they do look cool, especially the basses.

Every single one is "worn" the same, and it's a bit over-the-top, in my opinion. But this is why G'd invented chocolate, vanilla, and pistachio flavours of ice cream. If you ask me, there are many individuals who could make you a nicer, more believable "relic" a lot cheaper.

If you like it, cool- just not my cup of tea...

Just wait til you guys see the 'relic of all relics'... I found a particularly beat to crap old strat in a pawn shop... BROKEN OFF lower horn... huge paint damage.... after-factory routing (or should I say chiseling) ... body cracks... pickguard worn and scratched OFF in some places... (nearly inhuman looking -- the previous owner must have used a screwdriver or hammer as a pick)... chunk out of the headstock... I'm currently making it playable, so pics once it is done.

By the way, it has a humbucker shape cut out of the pickguard in the bridge position, and some crappy routing to accommodate it -- but it was missing the bridge pickup when I bought it. How do you guys think a Custom Custom would sound on an alder guitar??? And has anyone coil tapped a CC?

It should be made clear that you won't be able to "relic" a guitar in that fashion nowadays because most of them are polyurethane. A guitar or bass finished with polyurethane will get nicks, scrapes and all that but it won't age beautifully like a nitro-finished guitar will, it simply won't.

So I'm a bit burned by the "why buy an already reliced guitar when you can relic it yourself" argument. It would be true if most guitars and basses were fnished with nitro but that's not the case.

They're available, if you don't like 'em don't buy 'em, it's simple as that.

Gibsons are still finished in Nitro, so they will age well. I saw an abused (but believable) LP Standard that was a '99. I have seen the dude play it for that entire time, so it IS a real, live aged guitar. The chrome still looks great, but the finish is less than pristine. Anywhere nickel-plated (screws, etc) look a bit worse for wear. He doen't let a guitar acclimate to the temperature before opening the case. He never wipes it down, either.

One thing I am sick of seeing are the guitars on ebay that were played by guys who wear 50 grit sandpaper suits, emery cloth gloves and rodeo belt buckles with Dremels attached. Oh yeah- they also work on cars, eat a bucket of KFC and NOT wash their hands before they play their beloved axe, too!!! Must get lots of womens with the dirt under their hypothetical fingernails!!!

After all, that is the only way you can "age" a poly-finished guitar anything like a nitro-finished axe. This is one of the reasons why Fender switched to poly in the first place, as their guitars were looking beat after a few years.

Poly does age, it just ages entirely differently than nitro. It gets a tiny bit duller, sometimes a large chip will come out. Deep scratches rarely ever touch wood, but look kinda ugly. But poly doesn't age as beautifully as nitro, for certain. Rory Gallagher would have never made a poly-finished Strat look like the one synonymous with him, for certain.

As I have said before- if you like the road-worn series, cool. I will say that a parts-caster fiished in nitro with old-school vibe could be done cheaper and more believably. But if you don't want to do the work, don't mind a guitar that has the exact same wear patterns as every other one produced in that series, run (don't walk) to your Fender dealer to get a road worn.

IMHO, I think it's silly as shit. It's like buying jeans with pre-torn holes in the knees to get a certain "look".

I bought my Strat brand new in 1994. I don't know what the hell it's finished in.. poly, nitro, whatever... but, after 15 years of being played, carried, gigged, used, beaten on, etc... it's definitely got some major character marks, chips, dings, scratches, wear and tear.

It is what it is... not is what it isn't.

But again - to each their own.

I'd like them to come with a "broken in" series...not reliced, trashed out or anything like...just worn in. You know what I mean? I think those would sell a lot better...

I saw these up close at Guitar Center and they're pretty poorly done. They don't look authentic at all.

I agree. Reminds me of that Joe Strummer tele they did last year, not like a AV relic at all.

Do they still make the Relic, NOS and Closet Classic series or did they discontinue those in order to offer the less expensive Road Worn series? It's been a while since I was involved with this sort of thing on a daily basis.

I couldn't find them on the Fender website. The funny thing is that Keith Richards started all this shit. He didn't want to take his valuable guitars on the road so he Fender build him some new ones. Only he doesn't like the way new guitars look, so Fender "aged" them for him.
