Anyone a customer of ALDI grocery stores?

There's a new one opening up soon just down the street from a Super Wal-Mart (which I avoid like the plague)... No name brands, just their own branded offerings of food... Cash, food stamps and debt cards only.. No checks, and no credit cards... Bring your own bags (which you fill yourself), unless you want to pay extra for a bag, that you still fill yourself, and 25 cent cart rentals (which means they don't need to dedicate someone to run around colelcting carts all day, unless people do not want their 25 cents back...)

    So......

There are several around Atlanta. The premise is great and the food is made by name brand companies and packaged efficiently to keep costs low. I shopped there whe I was in rehab a couple of times and its pretty good. Try it a couple of times.

There's one down the street from me, but I've never shopped at that location. However, I shopped at another one when I was in college. It is really cheap shit, but hey, if you need to save the money, I guess I can understand it. They don't really have shelves so much as stacks of boxes with stuff in them--at least at the one I went to. You'll save money, but you might feel poorer just from the experience of shopping there.

The closest store (Daytona) is a bit far from us to really make it feasible to shop there, but we have friends that are now regular shoppers there and swear by it. They did say it takes a little getting used to a "different" way of shopping, but the savings, at least to them, are worth it.

There used to be one in my neighborhood when I was a kid. We thought it was awesome because their candy was cheap. Curiously, I saw on in Austria about 16 months ago. The name was different but the logo was the same.

They aren't bad. They take a little getting used to. The choices aren't as good, but for the staples you can't beat it. We probably should shop there more to save some money.

We have many around the Nashville, TN area. My family has been shopping there for several years. Sometimes we find ourselves back at Publix or Walmart but once we see how high the receipt is and how little we got, we are right back at Aldi. As others have said, they do not have everything but if you can force yourself to get everything you can there and make only one trip to another store to get the few things you can't, you will save a ton of money. That is usually our downfall. We need several things that Aldi doesn't have and so we just say "well, I can get those at Publix so I'll just get everything at Publix so i don't have to make 2 trips". It is hard not to do that but worth it when we resist.

From my UK experiences, Aldi is just really cheap shit.

In Germany, where they come from, it is still very cheap but they have a good selection and better variety. If they take off, they tend to get better.

Main point though : When times are hard, you can live well on next to nothing.

quality wise, how satisfied are you all with the products? I understand they don't have Heinz, Kelloggs, Kraft or other national brands, but rather, private label stuff. How do you guys think they stack up against the national brands?

Theres one just down the road from here, We've tried it, theres nothing really wrong with it as such, but we generally prefer to spend a little more and get a better range and a better laid out store.

But if I was to get retrenched tommorow and we needed to save a buck, yeh, no problem

Look at them the same as a Sam's Club. Go there and stock up on what you can and then do your regular shopping. They have great deals on things and the quality is just fine since it's probably like any other store brand which means it's produced by one of the big companies but is packaged for the store that sells it. We have several around our area and they do quite the business.

We've shopped there quite a few times...sometimes you get inferior quality...such as "stringy" red beets or a stem in a can of green beans, but for a lot of things...staples etc.....they offer a real savings. but it's so cheap, that if you find a product that you don't like, it's no big loss

Since I always shop with my reusable bags anyway, the bagging up of your own stuff doesn't bother me.

and since I have a bargain hunting garage salers mentality, (it's how I worked my way through college and graduated with no debt) I don't mind the stuff being displayed in boxes either.

Only drawback I can really say, is you never know what's going to be in stock

and sometimes the "bargains" are no better than I find on sale in my local grocer once I shop the sale AND use my double coupons.

I can't believe you've never heard of Aldi! There's one right beside the Kroger here. It's so unbelieveably shitty inside. The food is generally nasty tasting and you're lucky to find meat that isn't freezer burnt or already spoiled.

I'd rather spend a few extra bucks on name brand stuff than shop at Aldi. But that's just me.
