The Best Guitar/Fiddle Showdown You Are Likely To Witness...

I was digging through some old Steve Morse stuff, when I ran across this vid. It is a tape of the Dixie Dregs rippin' away during a performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, during July of 1978.

    The Dixie Dregs:
    Steve Morse: guitar
    Andy West: Bass,
    Rod Morgenstein: drums
    Mark Parrish: keyboards
    Allen Sloan: violin

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
    George Bernard Shaw

    Great find, Craig. Thanks!
I've had the Night of the Living Dregs CD for years, but it never occurred to me that they might have filmed it as well. Cool!

Now, check this out. I was YouTubing through some old Nashville pickers and I found this vid of Chet Atkins doing Orange Blossom Special.

Watch what Chet does at 1:52

Maybe this is old news to some of you guys, but it's the first I've seen of it.

You guys should post these in main, just to prove to some posters that there are other guitar players besides Ed, and players who were doing things he gets credit for when he was still in high school.

Not trying to short change Ed in any way, but guitar playing didn't start with him.

Also, was it an un-written rule in the 70's that white keyboard players had to have the big 'fro and glasses? Just seems like they all did!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

We had one up in the VH section a while back. Try this, but it was glossed over by a number of folks.

Dude, for a second there I thought I really had been banned when I read the first sentence.

That was a great thread, I remember that sucker. People were actually discussing something without being rude to each other.

    I know, a novel concept.

Good finds both. Morse was one hell of a player; takes stamina to keep your lines that clean and fluid.

The Chet Atkins one was great too, but I just wish, as he finished the tapping section, that he'd made the devil horns sign and shouted "Rock the fuck on" or something like that.

    Maybe trashed his guitar too.

Isn't Morgenstein teaching at some college now?

My understanding is that he was/is one of the baddest drummers around and when the cock rock thing was going on, he took the gig in Winger but that he was hardly one of the crowd...rather he's a learned educated player.

Neil Schon can do this with two broken hands and a 2 string Squire Tele.

Steve Morse is a great player and this does not surprise me. Actually one thing about Winger is that they were very talented musicians. Kip I think graduated from Julliard and Reb Beach was a session guitar player.

Kip and Reb were in the same situation. They were extraordinary studio musicians who decided they would capitalize on the formula. Those guys, including Rod, never got the credit they deserved.

I will get slack for this probably, but some of Kip Winger's solo stuff is really good.

I saw him do an interview once and he basically said (paraphrased) "we took advantage of the time and made money off it, and when it was over we got what we deserved, no complaints."

I liked he was just matter of fact about it. We did it, made money off it, it ended, we moved on.
