    Default Van Halen: Most Dysfunctional Band?

    Again, some 'music genius' on Yahoo with their blog;

    VAN HALEN
    Here's the problem: the only reason David Lee Roth got the gig as Van Halen's frontman was because he had a PA system (it was cheaper than renting it from him). That's like marrying someone for their money. The relationship was destined to fail. For eleven years, Van Halen was a tightrope act between Roth's vaudeville-meets-jujitsu shtick and Eddie's booze-and-drug-fueled guitar godliness. Once they released their '84 hit "Jump," the creative differences were beyond repair (Roth wasn't digging Eddie's new cheesy keyboard sound). Onstage that year the two were known to argue behind the stack of amps. Like the Police, time healed old wounds, and the guys played nice for a 2007-08 reunion tour... without original bass player, Michael Anthony, who was sacked for Eddie's 17-year-old son, Wolfgang.

    Sure, it sounds about right, if you feel like highlighting everything negative about Van Halen. Nothing is that one-sided.

    I don't agree with all that. I do agree that VH has been very dysfunctional.The PA though may have been serious incentive early on to get Dave in the band but it wasn't why they kept him in and by the time they were a hugely popular unsigned band I seriously doubt that had anything to do with his PA system.

    I think most people that have been in a band can agree that if you can find talented guys to thrive with and have success with over a long haul(years) with no real problems conflicts or issues you are extremely lucky.

    This is a blanket statement but from my experience Musicians(including singers, guitar players, whoever plays but isn't a true musician) are some of the biggest insecure, ego driven, backstabbing, two faced freaks you'll ever meet. It's all a competition on some level for some of these people. I have met many excellent musicians who are wonderful grounded people with modesty and impressive skills but they are the minority. Also the more mediocre the "musician" the bigger an ahole they usually are and attitude they seem to have.

    It's no surprise to me that so many bands have dysfunction(especially when big money and high pressure enters the picture). VH isn't alone in this but their train wreck of problems does overshadow many, sadly.

    Sure things have not gone smooth in Van Halen-land but are they the most dysfunctional? Hard to say. Other bands have had their problems and I'm sure there are plenty of others that had behind the scenes.

    I do agree that letting Mikey go was a mistake. Wolfie is good but not as good as the man behind the best background vocals in rock.

    Per Ed or Al in an interview WAAAY back, can't remember who, I thought they said they decided to ask Dave to play after watching him do Ice Cream Man for the Red Ball Jets.

    However, it has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that they make shit up as they go, so it could have been just to save the coin, I think I have heard them say that as well.

    In the end it doesn't matter why, they have done six great albums and seven tours with the guy.
    Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

    David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Unfortunately for VH, their legacy of dysfunction has surpassed their legacy of music to the general public. We as fans should be well aware, given the last three tours had a different lead singer each time--and twice a different bass player--because Ed and Al were pissed at somebody.
    CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.
