Default Eddie Van Halen playing “Crossroads”

    http://www.vhnd.com/

This little clip should make your day. If you’ve never heard this (and even if you have), then you are in for a treat. Sometime in 1984, Eddie Van Halen sat for an interview with veteran rock journalist Lisa Robinson. As the conversation progressed, talk centered on guitar styles and influences. Ed responds by ripping out an impromptu, note-for-note, perfect rendition of Eric Clapton’s “Crossroads”, to the obvious glee of Robinson (who endearingly refers to the tune as “Cross-Words”).

The clip has been making the rounds on bootlegs for years now. Although not the complete interview, this brief clip will leave even the most cynical VH fan with a large grin on their face.

    Awesome! NOTE FOR NOTE PERFECTION!

I saw Eddie and the boys play Crossroads (only a partial version) @ the May 2008 Allstate Arena show in Chicago. It ROCKED!
Also that night, Eddies guitar solo was OUTTA THIS WORLD! BY FAR THE BEST IVE SEEN FROM THE 07/08 TOUR! Actually that WHOLE NIGHT Eddie played PERFECTLY! along w/ the band! They were ON FIRE! Once again, imo, BY FAR THE GREATEST PERFORMANCE OF THE 07/08 TOUR!

Thanks. That was too good. Both those guys play the blues so well and fair play to Wolfie for joining in as well.

I've got a copy of this show on DVD and your absolutely right. Ed's on fire in it. Anyone who thinks he has lost his mojo should check it out.

Your also right about his solo. I'd say its only bettered by the LWAN solo. I dont think you'll find Eddie playing better than at this show....

Even Dave was having a good night/time...

    AWESOME....

Hearing Ed play it in 2008 at MSG...made me believe that he still has some of what he had 20 years ago.

I honestly thought he had moved on and he had to change his style of play now because he simply couldn't do what he did before.

I have doubts about that now.

    This is AWESOME!

One thing I give him and others of his generation credit for is learning all the stuff before tabs. I admit that if I have to learn a song or solo, the first thing I do is search the internet or my 15 years of Guitar Mags. I can't imagine learning Crossroads on record by your bed. Would not have the patience.

I've never learned anything exactly. I don't have the patience or the desire to be honest with you. The closest I've ever come is the solo to Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi.

Another thing I've never been able to do is a play a solo without drums and bass underneath. I don't know how guys do it. I could never play a solo like Ed did in that clip.
