Default Ed, Alex and Wolf donate to cancer-stricken deputy

    http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_11787370

Some of rock music's biggest names have donated autographed guitars and percussion equipment to help a Southland sheriff's deputy who is fighting acute myeloid leukemia.

Money raised from the auction will help cover the medical expenses of Robert Corrales, who has been a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy for nearly a quarter-century.

The autographed instruments, which are being auctioned on eBay through Monday, include Alex Van Halen's brass snare drum, from his personal kit, and a drum head signed by Alex, Eddie and Wolfgang Van Halen.

Rush drummer Neil Peart donated an autographed DW drum head.

"Several of rock 'n' roll's royalty immediately stepped up," said sheriff's Deputy Mike Ascolese. He and Deputy John Maio organized the fundraiser.

Paul Stanley of KISS gave an autographed Silvertone guitar, while Slash, Matt Sorum, Duff McKagan and Dave Kushner from Velvet Revolver each signed an Epiphone guitar that had been donated by the Guitar Center's Dave Weiderman.

Corrales, who grew up in San Fernando and Pacoima, was diagnosed with leukemia last April.

Several drives have been held to look for a bone-marrow donor, but a suitable match has not yet been found because of his unusual Mexican-Chinese ancestry, organizers say.

Ninety percent of the auction proceeds will help Corrales, while 10 percent will be donated to the T.J. Martell Foundation, which is trying to find cures for leukemia, cancer, and AIDS.

    The eBay auction-location numbers are: 290297815805, 290297821537, 290297834030, 290297835083, 290297837043, 290297839393.

I don't know if this is worth it's own thread, but I didn't know where else to put it. I thought it was interesting.

And most of us drumming types know how to get that sound already.

I got a real nice sound out of a 5"x"14 bronze snare using a Remo Coated Emperor X with the snares fairly loose and the bottom head extremely tight. Very fat, thick, cutting sound.

I think it makes a difference to him when it's for a good cause, as opposed to some hack on the street wanting 10 album covers signed so he can stick them on ebay and make money for himself.

Most of the people that hunt these guys autographs aren't even fans, they just know that they can supplement their income with signatures. It's almost like paparazzi.

Ed and the boys have always seemed to be willing to help out worthy causes, they're just not as charitable to their fickle, judgemental fanbase.

this is very common among ball players. Having been around a lot of astros and rockets players when I was kid (I had an in) I got to know guys like Hakeem, Biggio, Bagwell, Cami and others. A lot of them had person rules about who they'd sign for and how much they would sign. If it was a kid, almost always. If it was some grown man rolling up on them on their way to BP or back to the locker rooms after shoot around with a bunch of gear, they'd say no everytime. I once saw a guy shove his kid onto Karl Malone with a brand new, boxed basketball and the Malone looked at the dad and said "i'm not signing that damn ball." When it was a real fan with something personal like a card (that actually loses value when signed) they'd always do the honour. Stuff like napkins and whatnot was never a problem. I never took issue with this sort of thing.

I'm not big on autographs. Generally the only thing I want autographing is a cheque! But when I have asked for one, I asked for it personalised, especially to me, and when you do that, most are happy to because they can see it is something special to you and isn't for selling.

With everything I've read, the Van Halens have always been charity orientated. This is incredibly sweet of them to do.
