    Default Solid body feedback issues

Hey all. Recently I decided to pull out a Kramer single humbucker Pacer I've had for years. I used it for years in studio only. The guitar sounds awesome; very full sound. I've loaded it with a SD '59, as the first time I took it to rehearsal a couple Weeks back it had terrible microphonics. The body is alder, and the pickup is screwed directly to the body, as it's all I've ever done since '83. Well I took it out last Thursday for our rehearsal, and it's still feeding back the exact same way regardless of what size amp I use. I ran it through my old Superlead, my 5150, and lastly my Vox AC-30, and Valvetronix amps. No change. I repotted the pickup, reinstalled, and checked all connections electronic and mechanical. Still the same squeal. Now my Frankenstein replica is set up the exact same way, and it's free of these issues. The only thing I can think of is the clearance between the cavity and the pickup itself. Does this make sense to any of you? I could go grazy with the chisel or router, but before I do anything drastic, I thought I'd see if any of you have had this issue with 5150 replicas, or otherwise. It's of course open coils, so no covers are causing the problem. I've thought of maybe placing some open cell foam under the '59. Thoughts?

I almost think you got a bad pickup... weird. Maybe try stuffing some foam under it, but I doubt that will help. You also may want to go over the wiring in that guitar again and especially check the grounds. Good luck!

sounds like you have a short somewhere in the pickup (sounds like a coil wire is touching a polepiece), no amount of padding or insulation will help. you may need to get the pup rewound or replace i altogether time to try a bare knuckles VHII or my personal favourite the SD Pearly Gates (they sound awesome in my kramer)

Definately not the pickup. Cinched down the bobbins, windings are tight, and it's now been triple potted. Same as the other one i had in, which was an SD JB. Grounds are bang on. Even changed the pot just in case with a switchcraft. Any other idea-ers? I don't think the foam will acheive much either.

I've got a Pearly Gates in my Explorer. Tell me about it Tommy! Great sounding pickup in that guitar. What do you think of the clearance issue I mentioned? It's pretty tight around the pickup. Wondering if it just doesn't have enough room around it to "breathe" as one tech descibed. I just need some opinions from you guys because alot of what makes this guitar sound so
good otherwise is the amount of meat it has between the bridge and P/U.

i doubt that its an issue with the way the pup is mounted, unless the body is transfering too much vibration into the pup, and i seriously doubt thats the case. i'd have a tech look at the pup itself because from how you have described the sound, its gone microphonic, i've had simialr issues with pickups myself (even brand new ones) and no mount of tinkering helps.
does the squeal get better when you back the volume pot down?

I've gotta agree with Tommy .... bad pickup.
I've had pickups that read perfect on the meter and had no visible signs of damage, yet they squeeled like a pig.
    It happens.

    Just replace the pickup.

Yeah, I'll try another. I've got a Gibby Classic 57 I'll try. It just seems weird, cause' I've tried this P/U in a semi hollow which are known to bring out microphonics if the pickup leans toward this tendancy, and it's fine in that guitar. That's why it's a little hard to accept, but it was my fear that is what was going on. I'll let you know if it's rectified. Maybe I'll pick up another Pearly Gates and see if that fixes it. I don't mind having extras laying around. I'm always slapping new guitars together these days. I'm working on a destroyer type thing right now, but with a floyd. It's a swamp ash body so it should sound cool.

If its not the pup. it may be a sheilding problem.
The pup cavity and the control cavity should be sheilded. Even with a sheilded pup wire. All grounds should be sodered solid too.
If your in a room with all kinds of "gagets", it very well may cause all the mayhem.
    Unlikely, but worth a shot.
Check clearence too. If its too close to the strings, it may squeal also.
I hate to think its the pup. But it sounds like that may be the culpret.

seriously mate the pearly gates in an alder body will wail, mine sounds really "brown" and cleans up nicely when you back the volume off a tad.
it has to be my all time favourite pickup.
