    It's funny...

It's even funnier that when people called GW a monkey and had cartoons about him, it was just humor. Now that we have Obama in office and it's racist. (nevermind the fact that it is probably implying Congress is the monkey...)

Reading some of the comments on the site is just hilarious! Get a sense of humor people...sheesh!

More than anything, I believe this is a drastic miscalculation in terms of taste. While it may imply that someone with the relative intelligence of a baboon may have crafted some portions of the stimulus bill, it also shows a remarkable lack of feeling with regard to the injuries suffered by the poor woman involved in the gorilla attack thoroughly covered earlier in the week.

This also can be interpreted by the perpetually indignant as some sort of slam upon our current President, offered by a racist slanting knucklehead. Yet I highly doubt that even editorial cartoonists are that stupid in this day and age. Then again, the farming of utter ignorance in this country long ago ceased being a mere cottage industry.

chef - I agree about the woman who was attacked part... a bit tactless...I think most would agree. I chose to focus more on the "racist" part and disregard the sheer stupidity of the other angle.

However, setting that aside as being stupid... It's ok to call GW a chimp and have all those cartoons on him, but not for Obama?

I don't understand why it would be racist. Obama didn't write the stimulus bill, hell he probably hasn't even read it. Considering the chimp being shot is national news and a lot of peoples impression right now of our elected officials being incompetent boobs, and the thought that their jobs are so easy a monkey could do it, I'd say the cartoon is right on.

Kind of reminds me of a story last week where one of the Prince Harry was accused of making racist remarks by saying to a black comedian "'Oh, tell me, amusing, but you don't sound like a black chap."

Of course nobody accused Biden of being a racist when he referred to Obama as being clean and articulate!

It's all down to interpretation, and as I said, the "perpetually indignant" out there will find a way to find allusions to Obama in the cartoon. I do not necessarily see the comparison, yet one can not deny the obvious fact that people of color have been compared to apes for hundreds of years in this country, hence the over-sensitivity to the subject.

Again, personally I feel people are seeing something that quite frankly was not meant to be seen.

It is only a racist cartoon if you think black Presidents are monkeys. If you don't think that, it is not racist. Either way, the cartoon is still kinda funny.

Anyone know when this was drawn or published? Didn't GW administration pen the first bill? I am not sure, just asking. But there maybe a chance this could be about GW- God forbid the media poke fun at their Messiah.

Come on...some of the old Bugs Bunny cartoons were 100x more racist than this thing.

Pretty much. Context is everything with race. When W is referred to as
ape-like, there is no racial component. But b/c blacks were once
sometimes referred to as such, race enters into the equation.

was it meant to be a racist cartoon? perhaps not but he/she must have known it would be looked at that way by many. It's a pathetic cartoon. I can imagine that most black people will consider it a racist cartoon.

like everything else in life, if someone wants and needs to see racism in it, they will. Some people need to find racism anywhere they can to continue to justify their own shortcomings, failures, attitudes and misjudgements of others. On the other side, there are those that are so wary of offending, so concerned with NOT being racist that their racism radar goes off all the time as well. At least the second group is only trying to be nice and sensitive to the delicate sensibilities of others. Problem is, they feed the problem.

The cartoon isn't racist...it's sorta funny I guess...but it's not racist. I suppose it does a reasonable enough job of painting our political leaders as monkeys or whatever but it seems like a pretty insignificant cartoon...even in light of that lady's poor chimp going chimp on that other lady's face.

I don't find it racist. Obama didn't even write the stimulous package.

I agree Broken, beat me to it.

    Here is my problem.

You can interpret that cartoon a couple of different ways.

I blame Gawker for assuming this was racist and posting the story accordingly. You can be a little more open-minded when it comes to journalism instead of accusatory.

When racism is the first thing people see when they look at things, I believe it is because they are the racist ones.

There are so many distractions right now in the media no one is talking about what a Cluster F this stimulus bill actually is.

By calling this cartoon racist you are ignoring the artists point of the cartoon. And some how, if racism exists, then all of Obama's policies must be right for the country because he is black.

My opinion, whether this cartoon is racist or not, it does make a good point- THAT EVERYONE IS IGNORING-

This bill just as well could have been written by monkeys- it is that much of a joke.

And for the uninformed folks out there- The bill was written by a bunch of democrat crackers that Obama appointed.
