Default My chimpanzee! He ripped her apart. Shoot him, shoot him! He's killing my girlfriend!

    Stamford, Connecticut

The desperate owner of a chimpanzee that went on a rampage in Stamford, Conn., pleaded with police over the phone to help her stop the animal from mauling her friend, telling them they had to "shoot him" when they arrived.

    http://www.wfsb.com/video_legacy/18737281/index.html

Police in Stamford released 911 tapes of Sandra Herold's frantic call to police Monday as her beloved 15-year-old, 200-pound chimp, Travis, was attacking 55-year-old Charla Nash.

The chimp can be heard grunting at times on the tape, as Herold cries, "He's killing my friend!"

The dispatcher says, "Who's killing your friend?"

Herold replies, "My chimpanzee! He ripped her apart! Shoot him, shoot him!"

After police arrive, one officer radios back: "There's a man down. He doesn't look good," he says, referring to the disfigured Nash. "We've got to get this guy out of here. He's got no face."

The chimp attacked Nash as Herold, 70, frantically stabbed her beloved pet with a butcher knife and pounded him with a shovel. Nash was in critical condition Tuesday.

She suffered "a tremendous loss of blood" from serious facial injuries, police said.

Herold said Tuesday night that Travis had nothing but love until the "freak accident."

"It's just been hell," she told MyFOXNY. "There's no way to explain it any different."

Police said they are looking into the possibility of criminal charges. A pet owner can be held criminally responsible if he or she knew or should have known that an animal was a danger to others.

Police said that the chimp was agitated earlier Monday and that Herold had given him the anti-anxiety drug Xanax in some tea. Police said the drug had not been prescribed for the 14-year-old chimp.

Investigators said they were also told that Travis had Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness with flu-like symptoms that can lead to arthritis and meningitis in humans. The attack was believed to be unprovoked.

"Maybe from the medications he was out of sorts," Stamford police Capt. Richard Conklin said.

Nash had gone to Herold's home in Stamford on Monday to help her coax the chimp back into the house after he got out, police said. After the animal lunged at Nash when she got out of her car, Herold ran inside to call 911 and returned with a knife.

After the initial attack, Travis ran away and started roaming Herold's property until police arrived, setting up security so medics could reach the critically injured woman, Conklin said.

But the chimpanzee returned and went after several of the officers, who retreated into their cars, Conklin said. An officer shot Travis several times after the animal opened the door to his cruiser and started to get in.

The wounded chimpanzee fled into the house and retreated to his living quarters, where he died.

When he was younger, Travis starred in TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola, made an appearance on the "Maury Povich Show" and took part in a television pilot, according to a 2003 story in The Advocate newspaper of Stamford.

Herold said she was turned away from the hospital when she went to visit Nash Tuesday, MyFOXNY reported. She's trying to get Travis' body so he can be cremated on her property, but cannot due to the police investigation.

this is just tragic. Fuck the person who got mauled and the jackass owner. That chimp was killed for no reason. He shouldn't have been living in some loser's apartment who was drugging him up on fucking XANAX. Throw the guy in jail for killing the chimp and for the assault the poor chimp made on the other jackass.

People think they're so fucking cool and so clever and cosmopolitan when they go and get chimps, tigers, lions and other wild animals. If Sigfried and Roy, two men who have devoted their entire adult lives to preserving and protecting wild animals can become victims of the animals inherent nature then why would this jackass think it was a good idea to get a chimp?!

leave the poor chimps alone in their natural environment where they belong. Now there's a dead chimp who died a horrible death and evidently wasn't living all that great a life if his person was hopping him up on xanax.

To hell with the guy missing a face. If more jackasses lose their face, perhaps there will be less chimps being taken as "pets" by other jackasses.

100% right on...wild animals should live free, not in some nitwit's house

I've always thought it would be cool to have a huge track of land, i mean HUGE, and have a private rescue habitat for animals like this. I'd just travel the country taking animals from nitwits who have screwed over chimps, sloths, lions, tigers, bears, snakes etc. A lot of these can't be reintroduced into the wild because the damage the nitwits do to their psyche so they're doomed to live in a zoo the rest of their lives. If I am ever fortunate to win a huge lottery this is what I would put the money into. By hundreds of acres, bring together a bunch of skilled experienced specialists and take care of all these poor animals that get plucked out of their environment but some jackass whose only intention is to sell them off to some other jackass.

It wasn't a guy who lost his face, it was the womans female friend that came over to visit her. While I agree that animals belong in the wild, including dogs, cats etc. this chimp lived with her it's whole life and was part of her family. So much so that she could go away for the weekend and the chimp would be fine taking care of itself and not destroying her house. The thing even logged on to the internet everyday to look at his favorite websites. The chimp even sat at the dinner table with the family eating with utensils and was even trained to use the bathroom. It sounds like the woman should not have been drugging it with Xanax or anything else for that matter, but like it or not it is an animal and belongs in the wild.

I have no problem with skilled compassionate people having chimps or anything else living with them. I'd love to have a manatee. I can't take care of one so I don't. Same thing with a chimp and lots of other animals. I didn't grow up on a farm but the idea of living on one with horses and cows and chickens and dogs and cats and everything else is and always has been very appealing to me. I'm not in a place where I can financially make the commitment, or timewise for that matter so I don't.

I do have a problem, a huge problem, with fools getting an "exotic pet" and not knowing how to take care of it and then society blames the animal when it lashes out. Hell, even when it doesn't lash out, the person is not held accountable when a rescue organization has to come in and take their animals away because they don't know how to handle it. Either they feed a lion raw meat from the grocery store, or they fail to provide adequate lighting and diet to a huge snake, or they think it's funny and give their pet beer and marijuana.

Maybe I jumped the gun and lopped her in with the wrong crowd of people. Chimps make phenomenal companions for people who really know how to treat them. It's unfortunate that someone got their face ripped off. Two things make me very unhappy about this story: the xanax and the fact that she started stabbing her beloved companion with a knife. If she knew her chimp wasn't feeling quite right, why have people over? Why not get medication that is designed for a chimp? Why not sit with the chimp and help it work out whatever anxieties or frustrations it's dealing with. She made a very very bad call in how she chose to handle things and now a chimp is dead and some chick is missing her face.

Humans and animals have been coexisting peacefully in domestic situations for as long as humans and animals have been on this earth. It's too late to roll back the clock and expect dogs and cats that have been completely domesticated to "go back to the wild." There's nothing inherently wrong with having pets of any kind but there are too many situations where people's ego gets in the way and they ruin the lives of an animal and everyone else's in the process. There are simply not enough people who acknowledge and embrace the sacred aspects of having an animal in their life as a familiar. There are amazing gifts to receive and give but they come in acknowledging and embracing the responsibilities that come with having them. Like I said, as much as I'd love to take on the responsibility of having lots of different kinds of animals, I can't live up to them. I would be a bad person for a chimp to live with. I'd give it plenty of love but i wouldn't be able to support that love with everything else an animal like that needs.

Again, maybe I'm jumping the gun, but her having a chimp and leaving it to surf the net and hang out on its own while she goes away for a weekend may seem cool and rock and roll or whatever but that's not how I would treat a chimp.

    From The Straight Dope :

    Dear Cecil:

The other day I told some friends a story about how when I was 14 and living near Washington, D.C., I saw this 90-pound monkey at a carnival who could literally pick a grown man up and toss him out of a boxing ring. A crowd of people listened to a man (probably the trainer) dare anyone to stay three minutes in the ring with what appeared to be a large chimp. There was a fee to try your luck and a $100 reward if you stayed in the three minutes. Well, I'll tell you, I saw these big guys get in there with this monkey and get tossed right out. It seems the trainer had this whistle and whenever he felt inclined he would blow it, which was the signal for the chimp to do his thing. It was a delightful experience (to watch, at least). Anyway, I don't think my friends believed me. So you have to back me up, Cece: isn't it true that a 90-pound chimpanzee can throw a full-grown man through the air?

P.S.: Their great strength notwithstanding, is it possible to keep chimps as pets?

    — Tom M., Chicago

    Dear Tom:

Chimpanzees look mighty cute trucking around on their roller skates, wearing funny hats, and going "ook, ook," but when roused they are vicious little bastards and not to be trifled with. Blessed with a muscle structure considerably superior to that of Homo sapiens (if not nearly as fetching in a bathing suit), chimpanzees can handle almost anything that comes along. Three drunks at a carnival would be no sweat.

It's a lot easier to get a chimp in roller skates than it is to get him to pump iron — hence, most of the data on chimp strength is anecdotal and decidedly unscientific. In tests at the Bronx Zoo in 1924, a dynamometer — a scale that measures the mechanical force of a pull on a spring — was erected in the monkey house. A 165-pound male chimpanzee named "Boma" registered a pull of 847 pounds, using only his right hand (although he did have his feet braced against the wall, being somewhat hip, in his simian way, to the principles of leverage). A 165-pound man, by comparison, could manage a one-handed pull of about 210 pounds. Even more frightening, a female chimp, weighing a mere 135 pounds and going by the name of Suzette, checked in with a one-handed pull of 1,260 pounds. (She was in a fit of passion at the time; one shudders to think what her boyfriend must have looked like next morning.) In dead lifts, chimps have been known to manage weights of 600 pounds without even breaking into a sweat. A male gorilla could probably heft an 1,800-pound weight and not think twice about it.

As you might deduce, therefore, the word on keeping chimps as pets is a big negatory. Chimpanzees can never be fully domesticated; they're aggressive by nature and sooner or later they'll start to threaten their keepers in subtle ape ways that the untrained eye won't recognize, until one day — blammo.

But maybe you're thinking, I'll just keep the little beast until it starts to act tough, and then toss it back into the jungle. Wrong. A chimpanzee brought up in captivity won't be accepted by its brothers in the wild. Shunned, the citified chimp will either starve to death or be set upon by a simian hit squad. No matter how you look at it, keeping a chimp as a pet is dangerous and inhumane.

    — Cecil Adams

Maybe I am mis-reading this but the chimp just stood there and took the stabbings via butcher knife and getting pounded in the head with the shovel and did nothing to respond? Then the cops show up and he goes ape-shit at them? Maybe the Xanax was working. And seriously, what kind of chimp drinks tea?

no but didn't a very similar thing happened about three years ago in California to a guy who was visiting his pet chimp in an animal refuge, when the animal was removed from the couple's home by court order. They were there to bring him a birthday cake and he attacked the guy and basically bit off his face
