Default Joaquin Phoenix' Bizarrely Funny Appearance On Letterman 2/11/09

This was briefly mentioned in another thread, and certainly is worthy of viewing. It is genuinely funny in places, and bloggers are currently attempting to figure out if it all was an elaborate put-on.

Decide for yourself. (And hurry, as NBC has an annoying habit of yanking material from Youtube. )

His brother (or brother in law?) is a independent filmmaker who just happend to be filming him a few weeks ago when he fell off the stage in NY after one of his rap gigs. Looks like he is making some kind of "art" film.

Hard to tell...sometimes it appears to be staged other times Joaquin seems genuinely puzzled by David's humor and the audience' reaction. But it's cool, you don't see a lot of that kind of weird/"on the edge" appearances nowadays, it's a nice change and quite refreshing.

The story I heard was that his brother in law is filming him for a movie as he sort of spirals out of control in his personal life. He started filming him quit some time ago and is capturing his deterioration. I'm not sure if he has decided to use drugs or alcohol to help in his endeavor.

    He's my new hero.

I don't know what will make this better...if he really was giving a good "fuck you" to the whole machine OR if he's pulling a modern day andy kauffman. Either way he's freaking brilliant.

I think he's legitimately fucked up and not coming up on, but rather going through currently, a nervous breakdown. I didn't see acting. I saw a fucked up dude.

+1 to the truly Kaufman-esque performance.

Obviously, due to his current project, it's not anywhere near a breakdown, or drug-induced. He's just seeing exactly how far he can take this character...VERY Andy.

    Couple more observations:

    1. You do see him start to break ever so slightly every now and then when he gets a reaction from the crowd or Dave that he wants...and the "nervous ticks" are just used to get him back into character.

    2. Dave's comments/quips/interviewing banter reminds me A LOT of the way he used to interact with Andy on most of his apearances.

    3. In the actual footage of the film, is anyone else struck by how much Phoenix is REALLY starting to resemble Mel Gibson?

I don't think the world is ready for another Vanilla Ice, even if P-Diddle is behind it.

It's a good thing he is a good actor - he'll have that to fall back on when the "hip-hop" thing tanks.

I feel that he was clearly "acting", particularly the few times he fell out of character and broke a smile, as was mentioned above. He's played "drug-addled" before, and should be able to do it pretty easily. I'm actually surprised he broke character so obviously.
I swear, it's like I'm playin' cards with my brother's kids or somethin'. You nerve-wrackin' sons-a-bitches.

I agree with Seenbad. Joaquin has never had that type of humor before, so it would be strange to see him start now. Also, he is a great actor, which is precisely why I think the fact he breaks a smile is more a sign of nervousness and being confused rather than him breaking character. The guy seems legitimately confused and effed up. I would like to think this will all be a great "joke," but I fear that it's not and he really has spiraled out of control.

Remember the family he comes from, too. Not exactly stable role models for everyone.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I thought he looked like Rick Ruben.

I also thought it was a massive put-on...Dave wouldn't have kept him on for two segments if he wasn't in on the gag.

saw a clip of his hip-hop...the other day...it has to be a gag on a massive scale.
