I'd didn't much go for the first bit of Bill Hicks' routine, but I enjoyed it towards the end. I'd like to thnk that my mother would go on a talk show and talk about me and have as much spunk as Mary I'd like to think that most mothers would be that intuitive about their children's feelings and experiences. Not too intuitive, mother intuitive.

David Letterman's been a dickhead from day one. I never have cared for his show. In fact, the only time I ever watched it was back when Van Halen was on in '95. I can't stand the arrogant SOB.

What's the name of the song that the Late Show Band fades out with at the end of the third clip?
"With me in the band, it's one of those miraculous 97-97 deals. It's 97 percent you and 97 percent moi. Is it Mick or Keith? I don't know" -DLR

"We eventually started playing clubs, and we also did weddings. We played everything from the Ohio Players to K.C. & the Sunshine Band. You would love the sight of Van Halen doing 'Get Down Tonight'! But by the third set when everybody was good and tanked up--boy, we'd be blazin'!" -Michael Anthony

Am I the only one that thinks Hicks is slightly overrated? I mean as a stand up anyway. I like his material and I think his point of view was totally unique, but I don't really consider him "funny". Thoughts?

Since this show aired, I've been reading a bunch of nonsensical commentary stating that David Letterman has always been some sort of uptight nitwit. Sorry gang, that attitude holds water about as well as a cheese grater. Letterman is the same guy that championed people like Harvey Pekar and Andy Kaufman on his show for years. He made a serious judgement error in his handling of the Hicks situation, yet the material being viewed today is done so completely out of context to the time it originally appeared.

Personally, I give Letterman credit for owning up to this mistake. It's not like he needed to do so at this late date. And if anything, it helps us all remember what a fine talent Bill Hicks was, and how sadly the man's take on things is missed by today's audience.

Takes a real man to admit they were wrong and the routine is killer.

interesting. I'm not at all familiar with Bill Hicks. Before I watched the video of the clip today, I did find a piece about Hicks writing to his friend about the experience, and in it he said that producer Robert Morton told him that network S & P had told the show to cut the segment, so it was curious in the clip to see David Letterman taking personal responsibility to the point where he said it was he who had it cut.
