    Default Peavey 3120

At my local GC the other day, and I stumbled across this amp. I was like "Huh, what's this?" So I guess it's the new model from our friends at Peavey.

Peavey announces the debut of the new Peavey 3120™ high-gain guitar amplifier head, a versatile three-channel amp with 120 watts of power and a trio of distinct voices capable of producing guitar tones from crisp and clean to total high-gain saturation.

The Peavey 3120 gives rock guitar players a triple-threat tone onslaught with generous amounts of gain, 120 watts of power and three fully independent channels of all-tube, tone-shaping satisfaction. The Lead and Rhythm channels feature gain and volume controls and an active three-band EQ, while the Clean channel offers nicely rounded tones crafted by a passive three-band EQ and volume control. A global master volume governs the amount of power put out by its four EL34 or 6L6GC power-amp tubes, while the gain controls on the Lead and Rhythm channels adjust the amount of 12AX7 gain saturation.

The 3120 rear panel hosts a unique Peavey custom tone control feature, a three-setting damping switch that alters speaker resonance to create tight, medium and loose tones, from a precise punch for rhythmic attack to a full, widely resonant sound. Also on the rear panel is a footswitchable effects loop with dedicated send and return controls and a line out with level control.

I'd be curious to try it.

Any chance this is Peavey's answer to the 5150 III?

I did not have the opportunity to try it, someone else was playing it. From what I heard it sounded pretty good. The guy who was playing was playing with not so great settings, but it still sounded pretty good.

sounds like a new cosmetically changed version of george lynch's XXX head.

    XXX head description.....

The ULTIMATE tone machine. As hot as the name implies, the XXX(R) rips. An amp not for the faint of heart, it comes loaded with practical features such as a high-gain input and paralleled speaker outputs. Utilizes four 12AX7 preamp tubes and four 6L6GC power amp tubes. Power amp section can be converted to use four EL34 tubes. Delivers an earth-quaking 120 watts of pure tube power controlled by a master volume pot and independent volume knobs for each of its 3 channels. The Ultra and Crunch channels have gain controls to further assist in taming this beast while achieving killer sound. Tone contour is accomplished through passive controls for Bass, Mid, and Treble on the Clean channel, while the Ultra and Crunch channels utilize active Bottom, Body, and Hair (lo, mid, hi) controls. Designed to work equally well into 4, 8, or 16 ohm loads, matching this monster to a cabinet is a pleasure, not a pain. Includes footswitchable channel and effects loop, damping switch (tight, medium, loose), and line out with level control.

Also, for anyone interested, I see that Peavey is coming out with a 5150+ Combo (1x12) with a MSRP of $719.99.

    Do you mean 6505+?

Back in the 2004 "coming soon" catalog, they had pictured a 5150 II 2x12 combo. It looked cool, but of course with Ed leaving I'm sure it was just simply abandoned.

    Back to the 3120...
I could've sworn I read a post from someone on this forum who atteneded NAMM and talked to a Peavey rep about this amp. Seems like he said something to the effect of "We made this amp in case Joe Satriani leaves and goes over to Marshall" (paraphrased).

Pretty sure it was on this forum, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'd be interested in this. I saw a picture of it on the Peavey site and it looks great. My only concern is that it appears to be made in China. It doesn't say that specifically but many of the other new amps say "Made in USA" in their description, but the 5150+ Combo does not. That's usually an indication from Peavey it's made overseas. That's quite a fall for an amp (or variation of it) that was once their flagship amp.

Default "Frankly, I'm a little concerned..."

I checked out the spec's on the upcoming 1x12 expatriat 5150 combo...

I have to say I'm more than disappointed. What I would have liked to have seen was the 1X12 with a power atten./etc. switch...

Basically from 60 to 25 to 15, etc....I think that could have really opened up this amp in a new direction from the 212 - If you buy this one I still think you're getting the same animal as the 212, just that it's lighter to carry seems to be the only advantage - I guarantee this fucker will be every bit as loud as the 212 (within reason). Implementing power switches and maybe one or two other switches (freq shapers like a fat and/or midswitch to keep it simple) would have made this amp a lot more versatile.

There's still no way in hell you'll be able to play/record this fucker without some sort of attenuator and in turn without pissing off the neighbors - a really great concept with not much thought put into expanding capabilities.

Yeah, I meant 6505+. See, I still think of it as a 5150. I remember seeing in in that catalog, too, and I was semi-interested.
