    Default Taxes

No - not the great republic for those of you that are dyslexic - those other things that we have to deal with every year by April 15.

My one question right now is whatever happened to kid's taxes? It seems to me that it used to be if you worked and were under 18, you got back about every last dime you put in. But I did my son's taxes today, and he's barely getting half? Did I do something wrong possibly? Not sure how you can screw up "this is what he made" and "this is what he paid". Does he make too much now? Just seems odd that he wouldn't be getting most, if not all, of his taxes back. Unless he's claiming exemptions at work, but I can't imagine he'd be doing that.

hmm...not sure. I only had one job under 18 and I honestly don't remember anything about handling that at tax time. My dad must have taken care of it. I know that after high school I worked at a grocery store and I got raped at the end of the year despite claiming zero so my dad kept claiming me until I got into my early twenties when I needed to in order to get loans and crap.

maybe it depends on what he claims. to this day, I still claim 0 and then when I actually file I claim myself, my wife, and two kids. It drives my wife nuts because we scrape by month to month, but then I get this massive check back. But maybe he is making claims that he shouldn't be which would have him getting paid more per check.

It depends on what they claim and if you claim them or not.

It seems to me that when I was in school, I claimed 'exempt' on my taxes, and no federal taxes came out of my paycheck. The only things that came out of it were Social Security, etc. Do they even do that now?

I seem to remember only getting back about 60% of what I put in the first full year I worked. Damn that $3.35 an hour job...

    How much did he earn?

If it was less than $5,450, he should get it all back.

If it was more than $5,450, he should be able to use a standard deduction of $5,450 and then only be liable for taxes on the amount above that. For example, if he earned $10,000, after subtracting the deduction he would be liable for taxes on $4,550 which comes out to $458. He would get a refund on all amounts over that.

    Hope that helps.

Yeah, got 7,000+, so that's gotta be what it is. He does claim "0" - saw one of his paystubs. Oh, well - welcome to the real world, son!
