It had me going in the wrong direction. I'd say it is an effective ad.

Well put together and clever, but a rational person knows that final shot could just as well be a gangster. Or Charles Manson. Or Hitler. Or whoever.

It also evades the critical and complex questions that go along with this debate - as will the discussion that follows in this thread...

I think that is the genious of this ad, the fact is you don't know. It could be murderer or gangsta but there is a chance it could be the next President, nobel prize winner, etc...

In a way it is almost encouraging single motherhood. They are kind of glorifying Barack's upbringing. I know that is not what they intended but people need to keep in mind that is a vast exception to the norm. What needs to be focused on is birth control, and education, and personal accountibility. I really think our country vastly underestimates the value of two parent homes and I think that is sad.

Well considering that part of this stimulus is to promote abortion, or at least fund it here and abroad, it seems to me they may have meant for Obama to see the ad and maybe reconsider funding abortion.

Right. You DON'T KNOW. So the ad is basically appealing to the emotions of those who already agree with its premise. While, let's face it, putting a stick in the eye of those who didn't support Obama.

As an "ad", a clever piece of work. As a rational or persuasive argument, a fart in the wind.

I am not sure of the statistics, but I'd like to image that most folks that come from single families don't end up in prison or on the run from the law. Of course, giving birth to a President is a privilege only few mothers can have but giving birth to a decent person, I'd like to think is not a rarity in the least.

Don't get me wrong, not trying to have an exacerbated discussion on abortion, just wanted to get feedback on what you thought of the ad.

I disagree, I think the ad may make some people think twice about abortion.

Maybe. But I have to paraphrase Lincoln here. People who enjoy this sort of thing will find it the sort of thing they enjoy.

I liked the music - sounds like Philip Glass.

Thought the ad was a bit pathetic though. The same piece could be rewritten from another point of view with a foetus and comments like "They want to kill this unborn child", "A life must be preserved" and then, after a pro-life victory, showing the face of a serial killer.

    So what?

    Still, I liked the music.
A man could lose himself in a country like this.

    I agree.

The ad panders to those who already agree with its message and will only arise a roll of the eyes for those who don't. I'd be very surprised if someone was scheduled to have an abortion later today, saw this ad and thought "OH HELL NO. I'm raising me a president!"

Bottomline it was probably the best attempt by the Catholic church thus far... Whether it changes anyone's mind- I don't know, I do think it will make people think - And hat is a good thing no matter which side of the issue you are on.

    The ad was predictible? Yes.

I don't think this was necessarily targeting a group of people but the ideas people have about why it is ok for people get abortions.

Uh...what's it got to do with abortion? What, every single mother has an abortion? Or all abortions are by single mothers? Did Obama's mother want to abort him and then change her mind? Did Obama's mother not want him, and then change her mind?

Pure fluff. Figures you think it's genius.
