    Default Colored guitar strings?

Okay, maybe I really have been out of things for too long when it comes to guitars, but when I went to see the Eagles last night (awesome show, by the way), Walsh was playing what appeared to be a EBMM Silhouette in a deep red color with strings that looked like they matched the guitar nearly perfectly when I looked up at one of the closeups on the big screen.

So, guitar guys, is this something new, or did I take a nap along the way and miss it along the way?

They come in red, blue, and black.

Funny they come in black ...

Long as they don't sound like Hard Rock'in Steels....You're aces!
Those things are turds. You might as well just string your guitar with picture wire! I've never played string that went dead so fast.

I wouldn't mind trying em out, but I have to admit my first reaction was that "pre-coated" strings probably sound like ass.

That is simply odd. I can grasp the notion of colored nylon strings for an acoustic, yet a coated string? Perhaps they are a bit easier on the fingers for older players, yet wouldn't this cause diminished vibration?

Thanks Dino, those look like they'd be a close match to what he was using, and if they were indeed those exact strings, they sounded absolutely fantastic! Certainly did not interfere at all with that infamous Joe Walsh "sound" that he seems to own.

Well there are "coated" strings that are truly amazing sounding and last a hell of a long time. I'm not sure what brand they are but my tech installed a set with an anti corrosion coating on my Ibanez hard tail. I bend like crazy and they lasted almost a month and a half bofore the G finally popped. I replaced the G with a GHS G, and there was almost no difference in the brightness over the other well used strings. I'll have to find out what brand they were, but they felt no different than a regular string, and if anything they had better sustain. Probably due to less oxidation forming. I'm wondering if the colored strings are'nt just annodized. The only thing, and it could be unrelated is that it at least seamed that there was a bit of slippage at the tuner, but it subsided after tugging the string a bit more, and retuning, then they stayed in tune just fine.

Very interesting stuff, indeed. I'm a fairly aggressive player myself, and am constantly busting strings or simply wearing them out in a short period of time. Certainly worth checking out.

My old bass player used to use pre-coated strings and he loved them.
But he's a bass player ... what do they know. (j/k)

I had a customer recommend SOB strings, Snake Oil Brand. I have ordered a couple different sets and am looking forward to testing them.

I spoke with the owner/maker, Dean, and he is convinced that once I use them, I won't go back. It's a bold statement, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

I've always been leery of coated strings. I don't mind changing strings, and feel you should change often for the best performance. Granted I am in the business of providing and changing strings, so...

I find the colored coated strings "flake" around the picking area, leaving colored strings at the neck, and plain strings over the pickups.

Will let you know what I find in regards to the SOB strings. http://sobstrings.net/

Just called my tech and he said the brand he installed were the new Daddario EXP coated strings. They are absolutely great. He installed 9 through 46's on my Gibson. He said that some players have also reported less fret wear as well, and that's why he uses them on newer Gibsons exclusively as their wire tends to be a bit soft and wears prematurely.

Dude, I am a bass player, and I agree with you. At least for me, our guitar player makes me so much better than I can't even measure it.

He has helped change me from a time keeper to a musician, God bless Robbie!
