Simply Wrong: WWII Veteran Freezes To Death In Own Home

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Officials in Mid-Michigan said the 93-year-old man who owed more than $1,000 in unpaid electric bills froze to death inside his home -- where the municipal power company had restricted his use of electricity.

Marvin E. Schur died Jan. 17 in his Chilson Street home where a "limiter" had been placed on his home by Bay City Electric Light & Power. Officials believe the limiter tripped off the flow of power and Schur didn't reset the device. The temperature inside Schur's home dropped below 32 degrees, according to neighbors who found his body.

Neighbors and friends of Schur want answers as to how this could happen.

“Now that we do know it was hypothermia, there’s a whole bunch of feelings that I’ve got going through me,” said Jim Herndon, a neighbor of Schur’s. “There’s anger, for the city and the electrical company.”

Bay City officials said changes are on the way in an attempt to not let another instance like this happen again.

An autopsy determined Schur died from hypothermia in the home he lived in for years.

A medical examiner who conducted the autopsy on Schur told TV5 and WNEM.com that Schur died a painful death due to the hypothermia.

Dr. Kanu Varani said he’d never seen a person die of hypothermia indoors.

A neighbor who lives across the street from Schur is angered that the city didn’t personally notify the elderly man about his utility situation.

Schur’s neighbor, Herndon, said Schur had a utility bill on his kitchen table with a large amount of money clipped to it, with the intention of paying that bill.

Right now the city said the situation is still under investigation.

A memorial service for him will take place Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Gephart Funeral Home in Bay City.

the dude didn't pay his bill, how can you hold the Electric company accountable? $1000 in unpaid bills isn't like he went a few days or even one month over.

Absolutely criminal. Bottom line. Yeah the guy didn't pay his bill. BIG FUCKING DEAL!!! A 93 year old man who fucking fought in a WAR should not have to pay a light bill to begin with.

We're not talking about some ghetto trash or some lazy baby factory not paying their bills so they can go rent (steal) a TV from Aarons or Rentacenter.

We're talking about a 93 year old man who risked his life in WWII.

All this talk about stimulus packages, handouts for the poor blah blah blah blah I've had enough already. What the fuck is wrong with this country? How can ANYONE justify this sort of thing?! We have idiots redoing their offices 1.2 million dollars when their company is going bankrupt. We have another company taking a handout and trying to buy a fucking jet. We had almost 80,000 lay offs in one day this week. We have a president that is telling congress not to listen to rush fucking limbaugh and we have a WWII vet dying because he can't pay his light bill. REALLY? That's where we're at? Really? Jesus. GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK.

And I don't want to hear it...so save it. Don't start with "it's because of this and this." I don't want to hear anyone's republican vs democrat bullshit, I don't want to hear anyone's big government vs little government, I don't want to hear it. It's not about that. It's about common fucking decency.

That is the most passionately honest response I've seen in a long while and it's not just the US who treat their elderly like this... it happens here too. The so called 1st world have a notoriously short memory towards those who fought for the very freedoms of commercialism you mentioned.

Agreed on broken's response, but it's not just those who have fought for our freedoms, but the generation behind them as well. I had to put my mother in an ALF (Assisted Living Facility) for a while our home was being built as I simply could not drive every day and keep on top of the contractor while toting her around, especially when she would interupt about every minute with pointless questions (she has Alzheimers).

Anyway, either my wife, my aunt, my cousin or I would pop in unannounced just to keep those folks on their toes and make sure she was being taken care of properly. While she was generally well taken care of, other residents often were not and it disgusted me to see how these people were left to sit in their own waste or simply be ignored when making the simplest of requests.

the way I see it, if you spend your entire life working and paying taxes and putting up with the bullshit and contributing to society then when you get old and need to be taken care of, our society OWES YOU a nice, relaxed, dignified time. The way old people get treated is dispicable and you're right, it's not just war vets, it's ALL old people who spent their lives working and contributing to our communities and our society.

PG and E or whatever company it is (depending on the state) is not looking at the guy's age. They don't even have those facts on hand. They see that someone hasn't paid their electricity bill in a few months and so they cut it off. They don't treat that case any different than if it was you or me. It's messed up, yes, because you think they'd have some sort of government program (and to level with you, I don't vote, because I don't believe in our system anymore either. The only way for real reform is revolution, but at 36, I'm not about to go out and riot) to pay for Vets, but with people complaining about taxes the way it is, what do you expect to get out of it? It's sad, it's harsh, but it's reality.

Again, I'd have to agree. Personally, I know someday there will come a time when my mother will no longer to live here simply because I will no longer be able to take care of her medical needs, but then, what are my options? I no longer have the means to pay for an ALF, so the ONLY option given her ability to pay would be a State run nursing home, and we all have a pretty good idea of what those are like.

But that's the thing, they should be looking at just that. One of my older relatives (late 70s) and their spouse live on Social Security alone, and when they got behind in their payments even crappy FP&L down here contacted them and got them on a program that kept their power on and even provides a discount for seniors on a fixed income and even made their payment due date a bit later in the month to allow for them to get it in on time. If the joke of power companies that is FP&L can do this, other power companies can as well.

The elderly, assuming they've been a tax paying hard working citizen for their life up until their retirement, shouldnt' have to pay for an electricity bill. There I said it. Call it socialism call it whatever. If there's money for these OBSCENE and GROTESQUE expenditures buried in this bullshit stimulus package and there's money for some of the outlandish projects that get down all over the country, if there's money to finance these filthy baby factory welfare mamas then there's money to take care of our elder's light bills, prescriptions, and whatever else they fucking need. It's their taxes and hardwork that have financed current generations. It is a civic obligation to take care of our eldery. Period. At some point their bills just stop showing up. They hit a certain age, their income becomes fixed and bam, bills from the light company, from the cable company just stop showing up. They get an HSA account that the federal/state funds each month so they can take care of the meds and then they have their social security and whatever retirement money they've put together to take care of the rest. It's time that the eldery got what they deserve. I'm a firm believer that a society can be judged by how they treat their eldery and we can go a loooooong way in this area.

I aree and would go further and say that it is the duty of a decent society to look after all that cannot look after themselves. note I said "cannot" and not "will not".

SEA mentioned it in a previous post, but i remember in the UK, it seemed that every winter there would be endless stories about pensioners having to choose between food and heat. Pensions staying the same and bills and property taxes rising all the time - even working people are having trouble keeping up.

Fucked up only begins to describe the situation.
A man could lose himself in a country like this.
