Default JUST PLANE DESPICABLE, 'RESCUED' CITI Buying $50M JET

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/01262009...ble_152033.htm

Beleaguered Citigroup is upgrading its mile-high club with a brand-new $50 million corporate jet - only this time, it's the taxpayers who are getting screwed.

Even though the bank's stock is as cheap as a gallon of gas and it's burning through a $45 billion taxpayer-funded rescue, the airhead execs pushed through the purchase of a new Dassault Falcon 7X, according to a source familiar with the deal.

The French-made luxury jet seats up to 12 in a plush interior with leather seats, sofas and a customizable entertainment center, according to Dassault's sales literature. It can cruise 5,950 miles before refueling and has a top speed of 559 mph.

There are just nine of these top-of-the-line models in the United States, with Dassault's European factory churning out three to four 7Xs a month.

Citigroup decided to get its new wings two years ago, when the financial-services giant was flush with cash, but it still intends to take possession of the jet this year despite its current woes, the source said.

"Why should I help you when what you write will be used to the detriment of our company?" replied Bill McNamee, head of CitiFlight Inc., the subsidiary that manages Citigroup's corporate fleet, when asked to comment about the new 7X.

"What relevance does it have but to hurt my company?"

It's not uncommon for large companies to pay a deposit on a new plane then cancel the order before delivery, according to a source in the corporate aviation business.

Citigroup execs are also quietly trying to unload two of their older Dassault 900EXs.

Those jets, nearly 10 years old, are worth an estimated $27 million each. They were still listed for sale yesterday on the Web site of Citigroup's aviation broker, Aviation Professionals.

A company representative said she would not comment on "brokering both sides of the deal" when asked about the incoming Falcon 7X.

The Dassaults are part of CitiFlight's Gulf Sierra fleet, which includes the two Falcon 900EXs, tail numbers N399GS and N588GS, currently for sale. FAA records show Citigroup reserved a new tail number, N488GS, possibly for the incoming 7X on Nov. 10 last year.

A woman answering the phone at CitiFlight's private hangar in White Plains said she was "not authorized to release information" about the new jet.

Dassault's US sales office declined to comment.

Citigroup spokesman Stephen Cohen declined to comment.

Perhaps I should take a pic of said plane and send it in with my credit card bill and a copy of a newspaper article outlining how much of my tax dollars went to their company and tell them that my bill is now paid in full!

Well, if they sell the other two, they'll come out 4 mil ahead. Still, hard to rationalise after the bailout. I mean, heck, if they'd shop around, they could probably get a slightly used Airbus A320 at a good price. I mean, so long as they don't bother to pull up the JetFax...

What is wrong with the two that they have? It has to be cheaper to renovate at least one to bring it up to snuff and they could offset the expense by selling the second one. Yeah, the guy is right. It's probably better to keep his mouth shut and people think that they are idiots than open his mouth and confirm it.

Why do they need a jet, period? Try teleconferencing next time the meeting is out of town.

I'm still trying to answer that question as it relates to the tax money hand out...I can think of tons of business owners that could use a hand out to get through these rough times...what makes these jackasses so special that we have to fund their businesses for them? Oh yeah...they have congress in their pockets...

That's actually how I read it too. See, it really puts the whole bailout in to a really gray and unventured area. What do we really need to know about how corporate business runs their business? What business is it of ours now? Yes, our tax dollars are at the heart of it, but should that give us some sort of say? I know I have no clue how to go about running citibank personally. Should I really have an opinion there? Do they need a jet? Who knows? Maybe they do. Maybe there's more at that level that matters with perception than I even know and it truly is needed. Maybe their finding they don't need two so selling two and making 4 mil is a good business decision actually. Maybe their moving from two because their downsizing, so it's actually 4 million PLUS unrealized overhead that we don't know about.

How about if the Journalist decided not to mention the sale of the other two at all? I think it was bad enough that it was a side note, and garners more sensationalism than what it's worth.

I say that if my money is going to be given to a corporation then I want to know EVERYTHING.

It's only fair, I'm going to be applying for student loans and Pell Grants for college and both the banks and the Federal Government will have me fill out a ton of paperwork that profile my finaces and a huge chunk of my personal life before they hand over any money.

If I make $24,000 a year but I'm in debt for $50,000 and I spend $12,000 on porn and gambling then I don't get a loan. Yet if I were CITI and I waste the same proportion of my net the gub'ment still hands me a check?

    I don't think so.
