    Default New Sammy Interview.

New interview from Sam. Not bad imo. Nothing mean, angry or rambling in this one. Some will probably disagree.

    Discuss.....lol.

Edit: I still believe that other interview was bogus. Hence the mean, angry or rambling comment.

This guy, Steven Rosen, used to be very close to EVH in the 80s. He knows his VH. I think it's a typo more than anything else.

But I think this should give us enough material for lengthy debates at the Links - it's basically the best Sam interview in a long, long time. Among the highlights:

-Sam says Joe Satriani is better than EVH - discuss!

-Songs on the 2004 Best Of were actually old ideas from 5150

-Ed cannot write any new music, hasn't come up with any musical ideas since VHIII.

-4 songs from VHIII were rejects from the Balance record.

I think here at the links we NEED a Van Halen/Satriani debate, having totally exhausted Sam vs Dave, Mike vs. Wolfie, Gary etc.

    All hail Chickentfoot in 09!

    Interesting interview.

Gotta love the little tidbits that we've never heard about before. Well, at least I never heard about the songs on BOBW being found on some old cassettes and that Sammy doesn't think Ed and Al have an album in them. Of course, they haven't proved that to be wrong either.

Satriani is a great player, technically proficient, ect., but, too me, doesn't have any heart or feel in his playing. In short, his music doesn't move me.

Ed, I mean, what used to be Ed, pwns Joe.

Of course, who can argue that Ed hasn't written anything in years. Even the so-called good shows on last year's tour were nothing compared to even the III tour, though his playing did certainly improve a great deal after his 'break'.

Having said all that, since the brothers are busy jerking off in the studio recording things that nobody will hear, I AM looking forward to the Chickenfoot shit.

Ok then, with that interview, his class ratio just went back up. THAT people, is the way Sam should approach all VH questions. Very truthful and honest without being too personal. Lots of insight and no bashing. IMHO of course. Great interview Sam. (I know you're watching

    Right on! Very fair assessment.

Some of the answers he gave sound like ones we've heard before. Almost like he's campaigning to tour with VH again. Or like a bogus interview made up from clips of previous interviews.

You just gotta love this shit.

You could open for Van Halen!

Hey, you know what? It would be the smartest thing we ever did [laughs]. Could you imagine how that would be? ĎCause everyone would expect me to go out and jam with Dave. What people would imagine that to me, like everyone imagined the Sam & Dave tour and what I tried to do with that tour. When I drug Dave across the country on the Sam & Dave tour, it was done strictly to try to develop a relationship for a Van Halen Sam & Dave tour. But after going out with Dave I knew that thing was never gonna work out [laughs]. He wonít jam; he wonít cooperate. He goes out and does his little schtick and thatís it. But Daveís alright, Iím not down on Dave. I think he did a pretty good job on his thing considering heís been out of it for so long. To come back on jump on it and do that, I was pretty proud of him.

I had heard a rumour before when all the speculation that Mike did'nt play much bass for III started emerging, that the lick for Josephina was Balance Era, and the music for Dirty Water Dog (or Stompi'n 8H depending on your view) was being worked on with Sam but went nowhere. I can definately picture those two being proposed as they do have the feel of Ed's writing or re-writing structure of the time. From Balance, Take Me Back (Deja Vu) features an incredibly old lick dating back to the club days when the song was called No More Waiting. I don't think Eddie's well is dry, He's been known to reuse riffs since the beginning. Mean Street was Voodoo Queen, House of Pain was House of Pain, but with a much more driving beat to it before 1984, Etc. Etc.
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.

What Sammy says is that EVH hasn't written any new songs since 1997, basically.

He wrote new pieces of music... the 2 new porn songs, which were awful.

After 1997, that's when Ed started blessing ppl with water, punching out windows of airplanes, throwing Mike out of the band after callign him "sauce sobolewski," getting a teen to play bass onstage, curing cancer, continuing to smoke heavily after tongue cancer, etc.

We've all noticed it's not the same Ed anymore, and apparently that change has also killed his ability to write songs. All the facts support this theory.

Since I'm a guitar player I'm going to hone in on the Satch vs Ed discussion.

Satch IS a better player than Ed if you look at technical ability and overall speed. Sam gave a PERFECT, BANG ON description of Joe in this interview.

His ability to play anything and everything and technically just play it perfect and not unsoulful. He’s playing the blues like early Clapton. I mean the guy is amazing, soulful feeling, he brings tears to your eyes with his solos, but technically he can burn that neck up.

We all know Ed had soul and feeling in his playing. But have we heard ANYTHING new to say that he's still got it. And I know from seeing Satch live that he IS NOT just a robot with a guitar. He can go from the most soulful bluesy SRV style solo's to Blitzkrieg.

Plus AS OF RIGHT NOW Ed has shown us NOTHING to prove that he is better than Satch at this moment.

In the last 20 years Satch has LOST NOTHING in regards to his playing. Mainly because he hasn't screwed up his career with alcohol and constant band infighting.

Plus Satch is MUCH easier to get along with from all accounts so that makes him better in Sam's opinion and I can't disagree with that.

Ed is the REASON I play guitar but until he records something to base an argument on, I'm going to have to say Satch is a more ALL AROUND player than Ed at this point.

I'll be the first to say I believe Ed is the best ever but what I do find interesting is that unless I'm loosing my mind didn't Sammy say all the same shit about Ed in 1986 to the tune that Ed was the best ever? Just sounds like infatuation if you ask me. Joe is good however he ain't Ed. And yes I'm glad Sammy got off his normal template for interviews. And I hope Chickenfoot is a success.
