Default Opinions on the Duncan Custom 1978

I played Cotton Candy through a Boobtone (hard-wired, handmade amp in the spirit of an old Plexi on steroids), and she screamed. But I think the Custom '78 sounds almost like an overwound single coil. She does NOT do clean sounds. It is bizarre.

Anyone else have that observation about that pup?
Dammit!!! I still smell like cotton candy!!!

I thought my old one sounded the same and I played it through a Mesa Triple Rect. head. Almost needed a distortion pedal!

It was pretty hot through the Mesa at the luthier's. And she was hot on the Boobtone. But it was just bizarre how it almost sounded like a Single Coil.

I've had the opposite experience. The SD 78 pickup is very versatile and sounds great at every level through every amp. I usually play through a 5150 and it sounds like you would expect. When I roll back the volume it cleans up nicely. On my small practice amp, I need an MXR distortion pedal to get good crunch. When I play it through my friend's Fender amp, it sounds so clean that it could play jazz.

Maybe you just tried a bad one or it was connected poorly?

It didnt suck, the pickup just didnt sound like I thought it would. Very vintage rock sounding, cool with the MXR pedal.

Not sucks, just different than I expected.

I was just jamming on ol' Cotton Candy, and on my Pod I could cop good EVH-esque tones. Mind that I don't have his ten fingers.

It does not make the Pod clip like a Custom Custom or a Tone Zone will. I am starting to dig it.

Custom 78? There is a Custom, and there is a 78 which was also known as an EVH.

Which one are you referring to?

No such thing as a custom 78. Seymour signs everything from the CS

I have the SD 78 EVH and its THE best pickup I have...bar none.

I have boutique pickups in all my guitars and the 78 in my frankie rep is the total package. It screams with Rock...it plays great cleans and it in NO WAY sounds like a single coil. Im not saying your observations are wrong but I cant even begin to see how you would think it sounds like a single coil pickup....weird.

Anyway, I wish I had more of that pickup in my other guitars. I have Fralin's true 60 (RS guitarworks version) in my Les Paul and they are low output PAF copies..not hot at all. I also have EMGs in my Kirk Hammet ESP replica and those sound good but different.

The SD 78 EVH rocks for me.

Dude, I am digging it, it's just not quite what I expected. I still love the Custom/Custom best, however...
