Default Surprised Nobody is talking about Sterling By Music Man...

Indonensian/Korean made versions of the EBMM line. Looks to be much better than OLP. EBMM monitors quality control. Download the PDF of their catalog at sterlingbymusicman.com

Reported Retail for the AX40 (Axis w/ Floyd model) is $779!

Actually, this is the first I've seen of the new line. Thanks for posting the info.

And now having read about it I think this is the approach Peavey should have taken with the Wolfgang Special EXP. It reminds me of the Lakland Skyline series. Korean-made, but high QC and setups done in the U.S. factory.

The sterling basses are incredible. Among the very best products you can get in their price-range. I've not played the Sterling guitars but I would like to.

I am a HUGE fan of Ernie Ball Music Man guitars, as their quality and design are the best in the business. I think these guitars will be a success, as they look to be quality instruments at affordable prices. The OLP (in my opinion) shared nothing with a true Music Man guitar except for the body shape and headstock design.

I've been wanting to buy a hard tail Axis (the rosewood top/rosewood neck ones are AWESOME!). If these turn out to be high quality I might consider it.

here is one reply i got from pat who is heading the project early on

    Hey Man,
the AX40 is based on the Axis. The body is basswood with a quilt maple veneer top. binding all around. 2 humbuckers bolted direct to the body(kinda high ouput, but not harsh)
the locking tremelo is a good quality bridge. its not a pot metal die cast but made like the old Floyds. Asymetrical neck shape, medium jumbo frets, 5 bolt neck plate. its as close as you can get to the real EBMM. We really spent a lot of time getting all the small details right.

street price of $549 and will start shipping early March.

here is a thread at ebmm

Be careful about bad-mouthing the OLP around here, JB. I bought one to keep at my teaching studio, and it was about the biggest piece of shit I've ever owned. But anytime I would try saying bad things about it on the Links it was like unleashing the wolves on my head.

I think the OLP's are kinda hit or miss, but I have to admit, if you find a better one, they are a great mid-level or base guitar to be built up on. The older ones (with the older headstock and neckplate logo) seem to have MUCH worse quality control than the newer ones. It seems that the last round of them they sold with the real Floyds on them were also very good (and also had the newer logos, so it's easy to pick them out).

I've rebuilt 2 now, one with the old logos, one with the new. The older one has a wider nut (1 11/16), different frets, and an EXTREMELY GOOD stock neck humbucker. The newer one looks a lot better (curly maple veneer), has a 1 5/8" nut, and has more standard feeling frets. The pickups in all of them are mediocre to ok, with the exception stated above.

Here's the kicker though... I got mine for $140 and the other for $100 in almost new condition. I removed the stock bridge, drilled Floyd post holes, and cut out the shelf on the neck for the floyd nut. I then shimmed the necks slightly to match the new trems and installed Floyds on both. One got a PAF Pro in the bridge, the other got a Tone Zone. So for under $300, I got an excellent guitar in both cases. My OLP plays and stays in tune well enough that I often use it as my main guitar, believe it or not.
