    Default Bang-for-the-buck vacations

Alrighty...the wife and I are due for some time off. It's been way too long.

The last time we went out of town was when she was working for a lawyer who every year shut the practice down for a week and took the entire office to an all-inclusive resort....along with their spouses and children. (yep, he took about 300 people to a resort and they say atty fees aren't exhorbitant! They did those huge vioxx claims and stuff but that's for a different thread)

ANYWAY...we're not wealthy by any means but we'd like to get out of town for a bit sometime in 2009...we're thinking towards the end of the year...gives us time to save and we'll catch some off-season specials.

So...what do you guys think? Disney? Vegas? Cruise? All-inclusive resort?

What have you guys had good experiences with? Can you point to any specific travel agents you have good relations with? Specific resorts or destinations? What kind of pricing packages have you all enjoyed?

I work in the travel industry, I can't point you to any deals but I can give you some tips.

Investigate the rates - Kayak.com is a great, one-stop place to look for hotel rooms because they list all the 3rd Party rates (Hotels.com, Expidia, Orbitz). Before you book, ALWAYS CHECK THE HOTEL/MOTEL direct website to see if you can get a lower rate OR if they are offering a vacation package.

As a front-desk/reservation agent it is not my job to save you money. It's up to you.

If you have credit cards, check their websites to see if they have any promotional vacation packages going on. VISA and AMEX often have good deals. (Remember, list the package contents and investigate to see if you are getting a deal or not).

AAA has special cruises or resort packages, worth a look if you are a member.

Since you are being smart and planning 9 months out, you can scan the airlines for killer deals for September flights. Some of the 3rd Parties can set up an e-mail alert if the right rate pops up for your destination. Sometimes the Airlines offer the same thing. I would just bookmark the pages of a couple of airlines and check destination rates a couple of times a year.

IF YOU STUMBLE ON A GREAT RATE FOR YOUR DESTINATION THEN FOR GOD'S SAKE GET YOUR CREDIT CARD OUT AND BOOK IT ON THE SPOT

( One day I walked into the liquor store and the guy was all excited because he had just booked round-trip to Paris, France for $300, he didn't even have a passport yet, he was on the computer and saw the rate and said what the hell?)

Use caution when booking 3rd Party - Hotels.com, Expedia and Orbits all have various restrictions about cancelations. You also might not be getting the best rate either so double check with the direct site. Where these guys can save you money is with the large hotels and resorts so don't think Motel 6or Best Western, think Hilton, or Marriot or some large property. Priceline should be used with caution, no refunds and you pick your price but not the property so you might have an unpleasant suprise. 90% of our Priceline guests are unhappy with our location, whereas the others let you check us out in advance so those people has a better idea of what we have and don't have.

Already this year in my area business is off 30% from last year and there have been 3000 layoffs in my community. While this means that there are some deals out there your service could suffer as fewer workers do three times the work. I expect prices to drop 35% to 55% from last year in many US destinations. Hold off booking until May or June and make sure that the place you plan to stay is going to still be in business when you arrive. We might see another airline go under too before summer so try to book with a major airline or you will lose that money.

Watch the news and use your brain and you shouldhave a good time.

I like Vegas and some old geezer rock bands....book in advance!

Well hell, guess what I'm going to say...

The 1st time I came to Thailand, I had originally planned on visiting
Europe again. But dollars to Euros being waht they were/are, I ended
up here. And came back as soon as I could. Though obviously more
suited to a bachelor's getaway (ahem), there are plenty of romantic
options for the couple (Phi Phi Island, to name one) and I see plenty
of couples here. And while I might conversely advance the 'bringing-
sand-to-the-beach' argument, the dollar is still pretty good here and
you'll get a lot of "bang for your buck". If you're into that.

PS - I flew as a 'courier' through Jupiter Air for $500-$600 (depending
on time of year). While they only flew to Manila or Hong Kong from
Cali, I still found it cheaper than any of the other sites, even after
including the subsequent fare from HK to Bangkok. Not to mention
HK was a welcome addition to the itinerary. BTW, I didn't have to
physically 'coury' anything, just had to check in at their terminal
to ensure the flight arrived, etc.

I'll second that for Thailand. My goodness, I remember I had actually set a goal to spend 400 dollars in 4 days and could NOT do it. I went go kart racing, bungee jumping (4 times), parasailing, jet skiing, ate like a king and won't even mention the amount of oat sewing I did and copious amount of beverage consumption. The Philippines is very similar, but a completely different vibe. Also very cool. I'd have to flip a coin.

Since you mentioned it, depending on what time of year you go, Disney can be quite affordable. Some of the lowest rates can be found from late September until right before Thanksgiving and the place is generally quiet, all things considered. As a bonus, EPCOT has their Food and Wine Festival all through October. You also have non theme park activities available such as parasailing, horseback riding and Downtown Disney.

As for the on property resorts, I've stayed at a few, but the wife and I prefer Port Orleans - Riverside. Swimming pools galore, boat and bicycle rentals, evening carriage rides, food court with many different types of food available plus transportation to Downtown Disney (you can go by boat or by bus) and all the theme parks (no paying for parking for your car, which is expensive).

If you are interested, I suggest you watch the Disney World website often, as deals pop up and dissappear on a daily basis. If you happen to have relatives in Florida, you may want to see if they can get you any "Florida Resident" discounts, as I save anywhere from 10-20% with the Fl resident specials.

One thing the wife and I plan to do once the children are grown is one of the "Behind the Scenes" tours of one of the parks since children are not permitted on the tours.

    We're definitely considering disney.

The other thing we're considering is Ixtapa Mexico. There's a gorgeous, seemingly so, all inclusive that we can visit for a week and it will cost less than 2000 including airfare...

any of you been to ixtapa?

Those two guys were talking about how cheap it is to pay for sex in Thailand! I think traveling to Thailand + paying for sex = sex tourist.

I know the two guys involved wouldn't want to admit to that, but its true.

Doesn't anyone else here find it odd that on a thread asking about a cheap destination for a family vacation, two guys post messages talking about cheap sex that can be had in Asia? Gimme a break...
