Default Monday "National Day of Service"

Anybody doing anything for this...is so, what?

I'm going to donate some canned goods to a local food bank that's in pretty dire shape. If you are looking for something quick, but valuable to do, that would pretty much fill the bill, as people you would never believe are showing up to food banks these days.

Other than that, I do so much charity work, that it seems every other monday is a "national day of service" for me...come to think of it, I think I have 2 committee meetings that day.

I do not feel donating food to a food bank is liberal crap. I am about as conservative as it gets.

That's very thoughtful of you, OLO. No matter what your income level, pets are family too.

Here is the overview from the official GOV website:
In 1994 Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the King Holiday as a national day of volunteer service. Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate Dr. King's legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action. The King Day of Service brings together people who might not ordinarily meet, breaks down barriers that have divided us in the past, leads to better understanding and ongoing relationships, and is an opportunity to recruit new volunteers for your ongoing work.

Participation in the King Day of Service has grown steadily over the past decade, with hundreds of thousands of Americans each year engaging in projects such as tutoring and mentoring children, painting schools and senior centers, delivering meals, building homes, and reflecting on Dr. King's life and teachings. Many of the projects started on King Day continue to engage volunteers beyond the holiday and impact the community year-round.

Although the scope of the event grows every year, many people still are not aware of the service component of the holiday. By encouraging the participation of as many organizations as possible, we hope to make next year's King Day of Service the biggest and best ever, engaging more people in service that honors Dr. King's life and teachings.

This is an excellent reminder, Daisy. Thanks for starting the thread.

Monday is typically a very busy day for me, and this upcoming Monday is no different. I will be able to find time to buy some groceries this weekend and drop them off at the food shelf closest to me. I honestly wouldn't have thought about it otherwise, so thanks again for the info.

On an only loosely related note (and I am in absolutely NO WAY trying to turn this thread political, just pointing out something I appreciate), Monday is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day, and Tuesday we inaugurate our first black president. During the campaign the significance of Obama's race was not something I focused on, but now that this is happening I am quite proud of the historical context.

On the one hand it is a good idea, but people who have enough to donate don't really need a special day to remind them. If you are the donating type you do it when ever you can. Make it a specific day and that is when others take advantage of the situation.

It doesn't have to cost you a dime....that's the beauty of it! "We are one people, we are one nation and together we will begin the next great chapter in America's story" Barack Obama

for instance, if you live in San Diego, you can do environmental service and help eradicate invasive bamboo from maple canyon....appartently all you need is a strong back LOL!

go to www.usaservice.org plunk in you zip code and you can find an activity in your area. and most of them are "service" not donation.

The only reason I suggested food banks is that many of them are really struggling with bare shelves and if you have not scheduled time for an event..it's a "quickie"

and the pet food suggestion was a great one..shelters are flooded by people who can't keep their pets...lets help keep them in their own homes and out of shelters!

I purchased about 20 bucks in canned food today (for both humans and dogs) which I will be delivering to work tomorrow for the MLK drive bin in the lobby.

I feel (for one) that we will just be better off in the long run helping those who dont have as much as the rest of us. For those that think that's "communist" or "socialist"......well, no one's forcing you. And they never will.

Service can be the defined as the donation of time, talent, OR treasure. There's a person at our church that barely has two nickels to rub together but she assists in a weekly tutoring session for poor kids in Cincinnati. She walks several miles to do this. She is literally going the extra mile and is an example for the rest of our church who do have a few nickels to fondle.

I applaud the folks who do help others without the need of a special day for it. Every day that we can help somebody in need is one day better for all.
