Default Six Songs In Six Weeks--Written, Recorded, Released

(Mods: If this somewhat self-serving thread is better suited in the Musician's Corner forum, feel free to move it.)

I made this announcement today via my website and the various social networking sites. I'm quite excited to get started!

About a year ago I came up with an idea very much inspired by our modern means of music distribution--the Internet. My plan was to write, record, and release one new song each week for six weeks straight; whatever I'd done the previous week--good or bad--would be released via my website and MySpace page. It was meant to jump-start my writing and help combat the winter blues. I opted not to initiate the idea at the time because I was in the final months of planning my wedding and also trying to keep up with a few other creative commitments.

Fast forward to one year later...

My schedule has calmed down, and I'm once again thinking about getting back to regularly writing and recording solo music. And so it is, starting the first week of February and in each successive week I will release one brand new song for free download, available on the front page of my website (www.andrewthomas.net) and through my MySpace page (www.myspace.com/andrewthomassolomusic). I'm placing zero restrictions on the content of the music and will simply be going with whatever creative motivation hits me each respective week. It may be simple vocal and guitar pieces, funny-weird sample-based instrumental numbers, or full-band songs recorded with other musicians--I don't know. I suspect most will be recorded on my home setup with me using pots and pans and other household items to create percussion tracks, but I may also take advantage of my full studio space in St. Paul (I'm quite looking forward to banging on DT's drums and making loops). We shall see! The first song will be released on Thursday, February 5th, with new songs to be released one every Thursday thereafter.

I will make weekly announcements as each song is posted!

(I'll use this thread to announce the release of each song.)

I'm looking forward to hearing them. Can't say that I've never banged on pots and pans for my percussion!

I've banged on pots and pans at a friend's house when we were little and I didn't have my drums there. Yes I started on drums and I sucked.

pick up the two liquid tension experiment CD's for some motivation...

Its basically Dream theater with no vocals. The go into the studio with nothing, start jamming, and come out with a full CD in about a week.

Oh, I totally suck at drums. I've been buying snare drums recently for various sounds in my studio, and I'm excited to get playing them. But I'll be lucky enough to play two straight bars for loop-making. Good thing there won't be a video camera around.

I started Song #1 today, which will be released via my website and MySpace page on Thursday. So far I've made the drum loops and played bass. The "kick" and "snare" drums were actually made using our iced tea pitcher--slamming the top down on it made a nice deep tone. I pitched it down for the kick and kept it as-is for the snare. Then I added to the kick tone by slapping my stomach with my hand, which I also pitched down. I also added to the snare by playing an actual snare (I'm sure my downstairs neighbors loved that). I made a shaker by taking many years' worth of guitar string ball ends and putting them in a small Glad container. The next couple of nights it'll be guitars and vocals, and this thing should be good to go for release on Thursday.

Here's a few photos (and I'll be adding them as I go on my MySpace and Facebook pages):

Right on man! That's funny -- I just was recording a project for my friend's band last weekend and we went so far as micing the ceiling and an old cardboard box for some added percussion tracks hehehe...

Why not just use a drum machine or software?

Oh, I would totally agree with that statement.
Programming a drum machine is a HUGE pain in the ass.

My son uses Cakewalk (Music Creator 4 and Kinetics) to lay down beats for his rap stuff. He makes it look really easy, but I'm a real dope when it comes to stuff like that.

I love creating, and it's just as much about the recording as it is the music. My favorite part of working on movies (besides writing original music) is doing Foley. I love making something out of nothing and using oddball things to make what might otherwise be everyday sounds.

Song #1 is really starting to take shape. It's required a LOT of work (the song guides me, and if it requires a zillion things to round out the production, then that's what I've gotta do). I've already crafted an idea for next week's Song #2, and I'm gonna cut it live in one take with a bassist and drummer. Easy. Done. No day after day of recording with deadline looming.

I'm totally creatively lit up right now. If I don't burn out, this project is going to really feel great.
