Not sure if I can answer this question, because Dave's abilities aren't what they used to be, but he put forth more effort vocally than he EVER has. The guy clearly struggled at times, but who cares? He kept trucking and made a real effort to sing most of the words and hit most of the notes. So, in conclusion, the question is flawed. He sounded a lot better from '77-'81, but he pushed himself more on the last tour and sometimes sounded great and others not so much.

Easily. I've never heard him that good, that consistently night after night.

I don't know about best. I think his best years where 78-81 consistantly, and the 1983 South American leg. Dave tried really hard on the 1988 solo tour and pulled off alot of songs really well.

Dunno...the question needs to be asked...were you walking the planet in 1978 to decide this? What is this based upon? And ultimately, who cares?

Dave was singing?? That's news to me. Usually he just speaks the words...well, the ones he can remember anyway. Dave ain't no singer, but at least he acted like he was happy to be there this time. I saw him last in 2002 and it was horrible.

Partially agree with this. One of the two shows I saw VH back in '84, Dave was still delivering it, the other, not so much...but then again I think the whole band was plastered on that show anyway.

I will say that Dave gave it a real effort on this last tour and seemed to carry many of the shows from some of the boots I have seen/heard.

Overall, I'd say 'yes'. Of course there were some songs that he did better in the old days but show-by-show, he did really well this past tour.

    HELL YEAH!

Actually, Dave really started to sing much better a few years before he joined the band again. You could sense something was up with the effort he gave on his solo tour dates an in particular the concerts I saw in Atlantic City and Cleveland at the House of Blues.

I’ve got tons of music written, such a variety of stuff… Actually, next week or the week after, Wolfie, Alex, and I are gonna start jamming. Maybe we’ll give Dave a call and see what he’s up to.” - Edward Van Halen ~ 2009

Am I the only one who saw the Sam and Dave tour? Dave was awsome. Far better than he is now. New "VH", Dave seems unsure, more fake than usual, and almost uncomfortable. It reminds me of the 5150 tour. Hagar was vastly superior in '88 for the OU812 tour. Appeared much more confident and comfortable. Sam and Dave tour Roth was The Man! He was pissed off and singing better than ever! I hope he stays in this band and we see how he, and they evolve. He did sound great! But he can be better.

Musta been a good show, the Sam and Dave show in Phoenix was a shit-sandwich as far as Dave's performance was concerned.

Dave was fantastic in Vegas in 07, he was the highlight of the show.
