For those who have kids that are on the internet...

What software do you use to monitor and/or limit their online activity?

I'm running the Vista Parental Controls stuff on mine. If they want to views a new website or content, they have to ask the administrator (me) for his password. I can either say yeas and add the site or say no. It also filters for words (language) and content. Downloads are also forbidden without my password.

I can also logon as the administrator and view all content they have seen.

Does it do anything for IM'ing?

I think, Dad standing over her shoulder works....but hey my oldest is only 7yrs. In addition, keeping the computers in a central location that can be seen by all....like the family room or den.

When my kids get older, my wife and I already agreed. No t.v. or computers in their rooms. I'm sure this will be a struggle a bit later in their lives.....

Yep, in fact I've got Parental Controls set up to be extra tight for IM. So tight in fact, my boys seldom use it, personally, I prefer it that way. Just make sure you set yourself up as the administrator early on and choose a difficult password to figure out. Each time you log on under your name, Vista should ask you if you want an activity report. Oh, and you can also set it up to where it will limit the hours the computer can be operated...that came in handy when my oldest thought it would be a good idea to fire up the laptop at 2am to email his girlfriend; snagged!

    Nothing.

I just took them right into the worst of it and now they're fine.

We have an "eblaster" report that I get every day...it tells me who was emailed, what the email said, along with their passwords, who was IM'd what it said, who was chatting and all that was said.

It tells each wesite, each search, how long and what time they are on.

We also have the computer password protected and they can't get on without me typing the password. Actually, when I check the report tomorrow all of this will be on there.

I feel a bit like a spy but too bad... I'm not taking chances and they know I can look anytime to see what they are talking about. I don't read it like a novel..just scan to make sure everything is on the up and up... I also have to go on the IM symbols site to see what some of them mean! Geez! The germans couldn't have broken the teen IM'ing code during the war...

The computer is in a common area of the house. No laptops for anyone in our house, except for mom and dad.

Sure, the teenager sneaks looks at porn, but I have no worries about the little ones, since we're always right there over their shoulder.
