My niece has one she bought a couple of years ago and he loves it. She had to replace one tire, but other than that I don't think she's had any major problems. I get specifics if you'd like. I also have a friend that bought a Hyundai Tucson about the same time and I don't think he's had any major problems yet, and he's put some major miles on it in the past 3 years

    thanks for the feed-back...

the family is about to get bigger and we need a bigger car. other options i'm considering are: Dodge Jorney and Mitsubishi Outlander... but the Santa Fe seems to me the one with more room for car seats for the toddler and the baby... and a huge trunck too...

any info on the other 2???

once again, thanks for the feed-back

I don't have one but I hear incredible things and they are pretty much the only SUV in that class that I'd consider buying. I have a Pontiac Vibe and absolutely love it. It's perfect for the car seats, big dogs, moving stuff around. I love that the passenger seat and back seat fold completely flat and the storage area is thick plastic and has hooks for bungee cords and such. You may add it to your list of things to consider. But I don't think you can go wrong with a Hyundai...good cars, good warranty, good price.

My friend's sister has one and in her own words: "It is a rolling piece of shit"

It is constantly in the shop for fairly serious issues, including transmission problems, electrical problems and bearing problems.

When I hear stories like this about a car, it's time to check the specs.
Sometimes a company will make a single model of car, but use two kinds of engines or transmissions.

I learned this when I bought my Ford Taurus. Ford puts two different engines in the Taurus: the 3.0 and the 3.2. A mechanic friend of mine told me if I have a 3.2 engine, I would have to replace the transmission about every 60K miles. So I bought a 2001 Taurus with a 3.0 engine, it's got 185K on it and has had no problems whatsoever, just routine maintennance.

Check the Hyundai out and see if there's a similar situation.

    Don't read this.

I have driven one for 5 years next month and have not had even one problem with it.

I am so happy with it that my next car purchase will be another hyundai.

I rented one while on vacation in Colorado. Big mistake, especially driving in the mountains. Going up some inclines, I would put it in first and floor it and it would barely make it. I'm not talking off-roading, these were paved roads.

It did seem to have lots of room, and got good mileage. If you plan to stick to "normal" driving, and nothing else, it would be fine. But it's not really an SUV.

Never understood this type of vehicle, if I wanted something like it, I'd get a minivan.

this is a good reference... i believe that if someone decides to repeat the previous choice, clearly, the first one was a great call. thanks for the info

I'd have the same opinion if I lived in USA... minivans in Brasil simply don't exist... they are not in the market, if you manage to buy one from an import, trying to sell it after 4-5 years is barelly impossible. most of my use will be on city "normal" drive...

any opinions on the Dodge Jorney or Mitsu Outlander???

The Dodge Journey is a new offering (at least here in the USA), so it will likely have bugs to work out of it. Now, if they offer the lifetime powertrain warranty down there, it may be worth looking into. Mitsubishi has been in and out of the news over the last year plus as treadin on thin ice financially, in fact, about midway through last year a friend of my cousin was told that he would be out of a job at a Mits dealer because of this by the Summer of '09. I doubt they would go under alltogether, but something to think about.

If that's the case, then it might be a good option. The gas mileage was awesome, at least what I'm used to with my pickup and car. It had lots of room too, we fit all our luggage and junk in the very back, no problem, and had the back seat open for the nieces. It rode pretty well too.

Kinda surprising that minivans aren't available down there. Minivans have that "stigma" but they are very useful and very flexible. I think most people in the US who buy these "crossovers" just think they're "too good" for a minivan, or think they need an SUV when they really don't.

No experience with either of those.

We did have a Jeep Liberty for a couple of years. I loved that car, it was 4wd, plenty of power, the turning radius was super tight and made it where you could park anywhere. It had that "box" shape which gave it plenty of room, but wasn't "box" ugly either.

You might wanna look at those too if they are available there.

I'm not exactly sure what a "cross over" vehicle is...I think I drive one though. Is the Pontiac Vibe a cross over? I didn't want anything as big as an SUV or full on minivan but I wanted something with more space than a regular car. My vibe is really the best of both worlds.

"Crossovers" are the industry term for an SUV built on a car frame. I'm not sure, but the Vibe would probably be considered one.
