    VH vs. AC/DC in Pittsburgh

AC/DC played here in Pittsburgh last night. I didn't go to the show, but I did read the review at post-gazette.com. From the review:

"The fans who filled the same building last year learned from Van Halen that we shouldn't take for granted that all old guys can still rock. Eddie and the boys didn't. Angus and the boys certainly did."

I saw the VH show referenced in the article and I have to agree that it didn't rock. It was so well rehersed...from reading reviews of other shows, I even knew where the VH members would be standing during certain songs. It was more like a play than a rock show.

    Talk amongst yourselves...

Yeah, I didn't like the staged nature of the VH shows. But I understand why that might have been so, due to the nature of the band.....wolf's first time out, dave back for the first time in a couple decades, etc. I can see why they wanted that part of the show to be a known entity, then only having to worry about sounding good.

Perhaps next time out it will be a little less scripted from town to town. Still was pretty incredible for me to see them. Can't wait till next time if they happen to tour again.

I bet all the CVH shows were a lot more scripted back in the day too. Lord know Roth used the same lines every night for years.

Pfft. Not surprising in the least. VH is not in the same league as AC/DC.

Plus, ya know...AC/DC didn't decide to replace Cliff Williams with a teenager who required piped in assistance to play his instrument.

That stage was pretty lame too. It looked like Zigfried and Roy were going to pop out of the wings at any second...Well, Zigfried anyway...

At least in their heyday it wasn't as noticeable, from what I can tell anyways.

Hard to argue that. AC/DC is one of the, if not the, most powerful live band their ever was. Ask EVH, he agreed with it. But VH is so watered down now and, and yeah having an inexperienced teenager thrown in front of 16-20,000 people, no shock here.

I was just disappointed in the VH show, and I guess it wasn't just me who thought they kinda phoned it in....it was very low energy. I'm seriously sick of the Ed/Al solos, too...I'd rather hear more songs than listen to the two of them wank off for 20 minutes. Ed's been playing the same solo (pretty much) for the last 25 years, if not longer.

No shit. You'd think that they could, at the very least, cut the solos short and play a few more songs, considering they hadn't played with Roth in over two decades.

I've never been all that interested in their solos. I'm with you on adding more songs.

Actually, I've always thought it would be really cool if Ed did the separate solo pieces live in the same order that they were in on the albums. Like, if he did Eruption before they played You Really Got Me.

Yep, the huge amount of energy and flying all over the stage back then masked the scripting. But face it, just much more noticable now when you have guys standing around for the most part rather than the high energy days of dave, eddie and mike.

But that said, it could turn back to those days. When people get comfortable they loosen up. Next tour if there is one should be much better in this respect I'd think. As Dave said in his book, when he first got together with the VH brothers they were stoic as stone up on stage. He got them to loosen up slowly but surely, and by the time they hit it big they were flying everywhere. Like father like son I guess with Wolf and his first public gig, eh?

You really can't compare AC/DC and Van Halen, its like comapring apples to zucchini. Plus I never cared for them after Back in Black. Just me though.
