    Default My Resolution Project

    Hi everyone:

I hope you all had a great holiday season.

I wanted to share a new project I'm doing. As the new year approached, I began thinking about resolutions. I never make them because changing behavior for a full year is near impossible. Why set yourself up for failure?

So this year, I decided to make many resolutions. One per week, in fact. 52 weeks, 52 New Year's resolutions.

I threw together a website to list my upcoming resolutions and to chart my progress (video and journal). If you have a minute, check it out.

Better yet, if you have a resolution idea for me, shoot me an e-mail. I have 40-ish on my list now, so I'd love to hear some good ideas.

The site is www.myresolutionproject.com. No worries - I'm not selling a thing and you won't be hit with ads.

    I appreciate your visit.

    Todd

Cool idea that. Just consciously doing things that we might not normally do is a great way to keep yourself evolving.

I know a woman in her late fifties who makes a list at the beginning of every year, of all the things she would like to do that year, some small, some bigger, and every year she does most of them.

You never know where new things might take you, but you can be pretty damn sure if you keep doing the same, you will get the same.

How about spending ten minutes a day learning a foreign language? Doesn't need to be a big investment of time but over the course of a year, it is surprising how that mounts up. Even if you learn just one phrase or a couple of words a day, that's 365 in the year.
A man could lose himself in a country like this.

    Hey Graeme:

Good suggestion, but I beat you to the punch. I have Spanish lessons slated for the first week of May, coinciding with Cinco de Mayo, of course.

And I wouldn't learn 365 phrases. My project is to do a resolution each week, but for only a week. These are not compounding resolutions. But at least I'll learn seven Spanish phrases.

I don't know if this will help any, but I resolve to lean out the window and yell, "Shut the fuck up!" at the neighbor's dog who has been barking for three hours.

    Be right back...

    ...Yay!

Edit: Should I post that on your website, or do you just want to write it down?

Very true! And make sure they are small, easily-achieveable goals so that you get a sense of accomp...Hold on, he's barking again.

The dog thing doesn't help. My neighbor's dog is a chihuahua, and as we've already established, I don't speak Spanish.

I would dedicate a resolution week to reading a book manuscript written by any VH Links member with a log-in name identical to that of a cartoon moose. (Ahem. Get crackin'!)

My only resolution for this year is to lose another 15 lbs like I did last year. Well, I actually had lost 20, but 5 of it found me again over the Holidays.

I have two short stories in the bag, well one and a half good ones. I'm doing a little rewriting.
I'll send you a sample if you're interested.

I just got my Rosetta Stone demo for Spanish....anyone ever have any experience with this? Is it worth the investment?

As a language teacher I'll tell you right now; the best home study course i have ever seen is the CD's by Michel Thomas. There is Spanish, French, Italian and German. The basic 8 CD course is an absolute revelation. No books or writing or even memory stuff.

He is recorded teaching two students and you just kind of join in. I won't go into all the details but his method is about "thinking" in the language rather than just learning and repeating. After a very short time (literally minutes) you find yourself going "Wow. How did I do that?"

I have never been so impressed by any educational tool in my life. He taught, before his recent death, more famous actors, politicians etc than you could shake a stick at. They are expensive but I'm sure your library might be worth a shot.

There are down points too but, for a really fast and intelligent approach to speaking a language well in minimum time, this is the ultimate. Like I said, this is my profession and I've looked at a lot of these kinds of things. Raid your library and see what works for you best.

Whichever, have fun. Spanish is a great language.
