""Running with the Devil" is an unauthorized full length feature film screenplay I have written about the all time rock kings, the mighty Van Halen.

In the mold of "The Doors," "Walk The Line," or "Ray"... it is a work of truthful fiction -- a mix of known events, unconfirmed reporting, educated guesses and pure imagination."

ROTFLOL! Did you see his suggested cast?

    Jack Black as Michael Anthony!!!
Orlando Bloom as EVH, not too sure about that one.

    Keanu Reeves as Alex, hahahahaha...
Andy Samberg as DLR, not too sure as well, except maybe for the attitude!

In order to do the band justice, this movie would have to be over three hours long. There is a lot of details that would need to be included to do a proper job. You really can't just graze the surface on the depth and inner termoil regarding all eras of the band.

As we have all lived through this soap opera over the past 32 years any attempt to gloss over facts and details in a 120 page script would be deemed a VH 1 special not a major feature.

Hi all, I'm Mike, the author of the Van Halen movie script, site, and trailer.

Here's the deal. I've been a fan since I was 14 ("Diver Down"). Like most of you I've had my ups and downs but stayed a fan through it all.

I am a writer in hollywood, but I'm not a hollywood writer. What I mean by that is I live in LA and I write, but I make my living doing something else. (I work at one of the studios, but it's more of a 9-5 job)

I first got the idea that this story would make a great feature about 8 or 9 years ago, and the original inspiration was the image of Jack Black as Michael Anthony -- just picture him eating up a bass solo. But I knew the core story was Eddie and his dad. After a lot of research and a few initial drafts, I put it down for other projects -- the story didn't have an ending. That is until they announced the reunion tour. The inclusion of Wolfgang gave me a story arc -- an ending to the story that I lacked.

I finished the current version of the script about a year ago and am now writing something else, an original story not burdened with issues of story and music rights. Once that one is finished, I plan to start shopping both scripts. (Also the VH script needs a little rewrite, I have Valerie wrong in some places I know now)

Don't stress the casting stuff, that's just for fun. Actually I think James McAvoy would make a killer Eddie. (skip Wanted, go rent The Last King of Scotland and/or Atonement) Dave is a tough one, but that's all just speculation around the edges at this point, the real challenge is telling the story on paper then getting it to the right people.

And about the story, my first approach was also, like some have said here and in emails to me, it's gotta be 3 hours long or it has to be a trilogy of 3 films, and it has to cover every last little thing exactly. But that's not how (good) movies are written. All biopics condense, time shift, and fictionalize. It's not about getting every last little detail, it's about capturing the essence of the truth in a way that all audiences can relate to (not just the hard core fans).

Most moviegoers won't care about the nuances of a pinch harmonic (though I do try to cover that). More important is Eddie's motivation for perfection, which everyone can relate to. As much as I'd like to, I don't detail the recording of each record, some things are done in montages or expositional dialogue that condense years of story time into a few seconds on screen. I had to cut some of my favorite scenes (like Eddie walking to Sam's house in the middle of the night to write "Finish What Ya Started") because they just didn't fit.

"Walk The Line" I thought did a great job telling Johnny Cash's story, but it does not cover his entire life, and some fans who know every last detail would probably blog about the gaps until their fingers fell off. But that's not the point.

It's 120 pages, my script, and it does not cover everything. It's not even about the band really, it's about Eddie. Eddie is the hero of the story, it's about his journey from his childhood relationship with his father through to his own fatherhood and his touring with his son -- in the end trying to honor his dad without suffering his dad's fate.

That's it, that's the story, the rest -- the parties, the singer dramas, the tours and recording sessions and technical details -- all serve to tell that story.

If anyone with a trusted connection in the VH camp is reading this, I would love to discuss this project. This is a real thing that could happen. I realize this is a challenging project that will not work without the cooperation of a lot of people, Eddie primary among them. I wrote this not because I thought I would make an easy buck off it, I wrote it because I couldn't not write it.

Thanks to everyone who's been writing to me, I'm overwhelmed.

If you haven't already, please sign up for the mailing list at www.vanhalenmovie.com. There's also a Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=52566415494.

    A couple notes:

    1) If you send me any story ideas that I didn't ask for (and I'm not asking for any ideas) I reserve the right to use them without crediting or paying you. So please don't send me your version of the story unless we've discussed it first and come to an agreement on what your role would be. Damn lawyers.

    2) I am not sending out electronic copies at this time. I may post snippets on the Facebook site. When I do I'll announce it to the mailing list and to the Facebook group members. I may be willing to send you a hard copy, but I'll want to know a little more about you first.

I'm really happy people are reaching out to me. I love to hear from fellow VH fans and movie fans. Write me back or post at Facebook. I'll also be around at vhlinks.

    Thanks!

    Mike

Getting all of the cast that the screenwriter wants, even, what the producer wants, can be nearly impossible.

How about Own Wilson as DLR ?

    He's like, already High.

Or, How about a weekly Cable TV series ? ? ?

There's so much shit to this band.... It could go on like a Soap Opera for Years...
