    Default The Wrestler

For whatever reason, this doesn't come to CT until mid to late January. I can't wait to see this movie. It's getting killer reviews. Anyone here already seen it?

I haven't but I really really want to. All things seem to point to it being an incredible film, whether you're a fan of pro wrestling or not. Years ago when Nic Cage was slated to be in it, it seemed like it was going to be pretty crappy but they got rourke and seemed to take it in a whole different direction. This is my "gotta see" movie right now.

It looks interesting. Springsteen contributed the title song.

    'The Wrestler' Movie Trailer (2:29)
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

The director was on Howard Stern and said that Cage was not too happy that he was "dismissed" from the role. He also said that the day he picked Mickey Rourke for the role, Rourke was pulled over for a DWI or something like that.

He wouldn't say that Rourke did roids for this role but I have to think he did. He's in unbelievable shape.

well he was a "professional" boxer for some time and as I understand it he still trains heavily...or he could have juiced...but then again, it's not like you can take steroids and sit on your ass posting to the links all day and get ripped.....or can you? hmmm....

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem if he did take them for the movie. It wouldn't be all that realistic if he looked like a "regular" guy.

I thought Mickey was one of the best back in the eighties. Sure he took a break to prove he was a tough guy, but he's been back in the movies for quite a while now. I thought he put in really good understated performances in "Man on fire" and "once upon a time in Mexico". The hype about this movie puts me off a bit - all that "Movies imitating life imitating movies" stuff is a bit trite.

The reviews I've read (I know, I know) seem to suggest that what is an over sentimental piece of trash is saved by Mickey's performance. As a fan of his, I'll see the film, for his performance. I just hope the movie isn't what I think it might be.

To be honest i don't have a problem with anyone juicing. I don't see why it's against the rules. Yeah it's bad for you, but if someone wants to take that risk, so be it. It's their body, their career. I don't put a lot of stock in the whole notion that doing so creates a bad role model, blah blah blah. Nor do I think it "unevens" the playing field. The playing field, as it were, is already uneven by simple genetics and people's desire, or lack there of, to work and apply themselves. A truly level playing field can really only be achieved if we populated each team with exact clones and then closely monitored their work out and practice schedules to ensure that no one did any more or any less than anyone else. At that point you'd have a perfectly level playing field where only the participants "will" and how they have applied their skills. The idea of juicing increasing one's ability is pretty suspect. I've never heard of anyone being able to hit a slider or a curve any better because of steroids. What's more, you can juice all day long, you still have to hit the weights, you still have to work out, or it's not going to make any difference whatsoever. Should we also ban modern health and wellness programs? Those didn't exist even 30 years ago and as such players like Babe Ruth could not benefit from them. If Mickey Mantle hadn't been a fall down drunk who showed up to spring training completely out of shape every season had benefited from modern health and wellness programs...my god, he would have hit 900 homeruns and played 10 years longer.

    I say let 'em juice.

There, now back to our regularly scheduled thread.

It's such a classic. I haven't seen it in years and I'm at work so i couldn't watch it with the sound on, but I just started cracking up when Hartman rips his arms off! IMHO he was the single greatest castmember ever on SNL. If they ever had an MVP it was him. He could imitate anyone and he was ALWAYS funny, even in a skit that bombed. What a tragedy...

Sorry, now back to the Wrestler discussion...

I am looking forward to this movie as well. Hopefully they plan to show it in the backwoods movie theaters we have around here. On top of that, I read where Marisa Tomei had nipple rings and plays a stripper. Sweet....
