    Default Oddball Wolfgang

Took the time to take some pics of this wolfgang I was lucky enough to come across. Turns out it was built for Dweezil zappa ! The serial # is unlike any other wolfgang I have seen other than a prototype I have seen posted. The pickup in the bridge was his choice, it is a duncan blues saraceno. People should check out blues saraceno if they have not before, he is an excellent guitar player. It is an excellent pickup. It is really hot and gets pinched harmonics out really well. It is a smoker !!

Looks like a custom shop job with the color and birdseye neck. That is an awesome color. Did you buy it?

cool color...i've always thought that the color of most wolfgangs were kinda weak.
Any musicians near Boston / Cape Cod want to get together and play some VH? I play drums, guitar, keyboard, bass, and I sing. I want to start a VH tribute band. Contact me if interested.

Does the headstock have the ten degree tilt, or is it straight like a typical Special neck?

It does have the ten degree tilt. I have been wondering why they did both ? I never researched wolfgangs like I did the ebmm's.

Every birdseye neck I have seen on a Custom Special has been straight like a typical special neck.

The tilt neck only came on the arch tops and the specials had straight headstocks. Is the fretboard rosewood or ebony? If it is ebony then you know for sure it is a custom shop neck.

If the serial number starts with a "1," then it's marked by Peavey as a prototype. That was also the way they marked early custom guitars, before the opened the custom shop.

Early pictures of Ed with Wolfgang Specials (like the ivory and black ones with Steinberger trems he played live in '98) had necks that were birdseye, had Schaller tuners, and had the ten degree tilt. They were simply standard necks attached to Special bodies.

The serial # does start with a "1....." The board is a dark piece of rosewood. I took off the neck to check for any other significant signs...... there are a set of #'s scribbled on back of the heel and a set of #'s on the butt of the heel, nothing else. Basswood body as I expected. Looks like a one piece blank, no signs of seams anywhere.

I've wondered about the reason for tilted/non tilted headstocks on the Wolfgangs. I'm guessing the Standards had the tilt because some of them had the stoptail. That would help with tuning stability and eliminate the need for "string trees". The Specials all had Floyds, so there was no need. Plus it was a different neck (non-birdseye) anyway.

Were production Specials available with stoptails? Or was it custom shop versions? Whenever I see stoptails, it's always on a standard. I could be wrong and therefore I have no idea why Standards have tilted headstocks and Specials don't.

There were some production specials with stop tails but I believe they were usually the solid color ones and not the flametop ones.
