Default The Al Di Meola Thread

I'm not a HUGE follower of his works but after listening to this:

I just might start following him a bit.

Check out Elegant Gypsy. I have seen Al several times outside of Return to Forever. Hes awesome for sure. He usually has a meet and greet after his shows at small venues.

Al is one of the best, no doubt.

I liked "Cosmopolitan life" with Leonid Agutin recently. First time I've heard him in a pop setting. It's a good album.

A man could lose himself in a country like this.

He was one of the guys that inspired me in the beginning, but then depressed me soon after b/c I knew I would never have his right hand. Dang.
His best is the acoustic stuff with "The Trio" (McLaughlin, De Lucia). Check out
Fri Nite in SF (live), and Passion, Grace and Fire. They also did a 3rd album
this century, but the two older ones are definitive, imo.

Yep, Elegant Gypsy was tremendous when I was starting out. The guy has a tremendous vibrato, and really shows taste in his note selection. Here he is ripping it up in 1988, on a track (naturally) from 'Gypsy.

I saw Al in 2003. He commented on a copy of Gypsy that somebody passed up on LP for him to sign. In the encore, ppl started shouting for Race With the Devil. He said "I'd love to, but its like this - its been 20 freakin' years". Ppl kept asking, he grabbed the record jacket from the guy and said "somebody put this on and we'll play along". Ppl kept cheering, and he looked at a couple of the other guys in the band and nodded and said "Ok, we didn't practice it, but we'll see what happens"... and it was cool, and rough around the edges and HONEST, and so much better than something well rehearsed with perfectly timed explosions going off in the background. He commented at the end of the night how shocked he was at the crowd, given he hadn't been in Raleigh in 20 years, and how much people loved the older material.

Man, what a wonderful story. It just goes to show you how some of these fellows are unaware of their influence or popularity, therefore remaining somewhat humble and true to their art. Thanks for sharing that, nitefly.

I had the privilege of seeing Al, Paco De Luca and John Mc Laughlin at Penn State in 1980. Unbelivable
