Default Guitar Method - Van Halen DVD (instructional)

Anyone checked out the the "Guitar Method - in the style of Van Halen" DVD's by Curt Mitchell? I've seen these at the Vanhalenstore.com for a while now and was curious if they were any good.

It's not too bad. There are only a few riffs on there that I didn't already know, but it depends on how long you've been playing. It can be unintentionally funny at times just because the guy is so....well...stoner heavy metal-ish. He spends a lot of time going through Eddie's rig for the different time periods and talks about the change in techniques. He really knows his stuff and can definitely play it, but again, I would only recommend it if you don't know many VH songs.

To give you an idea, some of the things that are covered:
Eddie pick scrapes, the plucking of the bridge at the beginning of Running with the Devil, the volume knob swells with delay for Cathedral, the volume switching at the end of the YRGM solo, artificial harmonics, tapping, the drill for Poundcake (it's a stretch, I know), trills, and the scraping intro to Atomic Punk.

As you can see, most of the stuff is self explanatory, but you might some value in it. I'd ask for it for Christmas, that's what I did. That way there's no harm done if you think it sucks

CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Thanks for the feedback. I will probably check it out to see if I can pick up a trick or three.

I'm about as intermediate as it gets when it comes to formal instruction on guitar and I've been playing for years. Just a couch player. I like Mitchell's style in that it's thorough and he slows down what he's doing and explains the songs very well.

Bsbll's right. There's a lot of unintentional humor in it. Mitchell comes off as a great player and obviously very serious about what he does. Like Bsbll, I couldn't have cared less about the rig and the sounds and stuff but I appreciated the way he broke the riffs down, slowed them down, explained them, and then tabbed them out. That was really helpful for a player like me. My ears suck.

I'd also check out the Lick Library series with Jamie Humphries. Good stuff.
