Default John Walker Lindh Asks Bush For Freedom

'American Taliban' Lindh Asks Bush for Freedom

SAN FRANCISCO -- The parents of American-born Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh on Wednesday pleaded with President George W. Bush to set their son free before he leaves office next month.

Lindh was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in 2002 to serving in the Taliban army, which violated U.S. economic sanctions against Afghanistan at that time.

At a news conference in San Francisco, Lindh's mother Marilyn Walker asked the president to show mercy during the Christmas season by commuting her son's sentence.

"John made a mistake in joining the Taliban," she said.

Click here to read about the case.

Lindh, who was born and raised in San Francisco suburb of Marin County, converted to Islam when he was 16 and traveled to Yemen, Pakistan and Afghanistan in furtherance of his religious studies, his lawyer Jim Brosnahan said at the news conference.

Lindh was captured by Northern Alliance forces in Afghanistan on Dec. 1, 2001, and was shot and wounded during a prison uprising. He was later turned over to U.S. authorities. He is currently serving his sentence in a minimum-security prison in Terre Haute, Ind.

Lindh, 28, initially asked for a commutation in 2004 and his lawyers have filed new petitions each year since.

The U.S. Department of Justice has never acted on the previous petitions. A spokeswoman said Wednesday the latest request is under review.

Lindh and more than 2,000 other people, including junk bond king Michael Milken, media mogul Conrad Black and former Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham, have applied to the Justice Department seeking official forgiveness in the form of pardons or sentence commutations.

I think he should feel lucky to be where he is.

If it were it up to me, I'd send him back to Afghanistan and see how long he last with a surge of Marines.

His parents and he are lucky that the Marines didn't blow his head off. I guess it pays to cower in a corner.

Leave him in a room full of pissed-off marines that have just gotten back or are about to go over to Afghanistan and see what happens. That A-Hole doesn't deserve a pardon.

A mistake? Looks like a choice to me. A rather large choice that he continued to live with after he found out what it was all about. I say let him continue to live with his choice. He can rot in jail with it for company. It wouldn't have been a mistake but for the simple fact he got busted.

Seriously, A Mistake.... I don't think so. A mistake is asking a fat chick how far along is she. Deciding to change religions, hop a plane for Afghanistan and use ancient riffles to fight the US Marines is a choice, and a stupid one at that.

Once he knowingly decided to take up arms against the US it is no longer a bad choice.

He had plenty of opportunity to say " whoa! what the hell am I doing, I am fighting against the United States" but he didn't.

It's a minimum security prison, he probably doesn't have it half bad for what he likes to do.

He reads his Quran (sp?), does his chores, and gets three hots and a cot. He has it better than he deserves.

Whatever happened to the term "treason"?

Whatever happened to the concept of traitors facing a firing squad?

Hopefully someone that knows the law a bit better than I do can correct me if I'm wrong, but from how I understand it, there are two main reasons that Lindh can't be charged with treason:

1.) You need two witnesses to prove a charge of treason.

2.) There's no direct evidence that he was fighting against U.S. Forces, but rather against the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan.

In lieu of that, reassignment to federal "pound me in the ass" prison might help him re-evaluate his view of life as well.

    Honor Mike Spann

    Honor Mike Spann

    Backstory:

    "No Mercy for Jihad Johnny"
    by Michelle Malkin
    Creators Syndicate
    Copyright 2008

If it’s December, it’s time for the Left to throw another shameless pity party for convicted American jihadist John Walker Lindh (aka Suleyman al-Faris, aka Abdul Hamid). Every Christmas season for the last four years, the Taliban accomplice and his parents have asked President Bush to pardon him. This country should save its tears and mercy for the defenders of freedom.

The further we have moved from the September 11 attacks, the cloudier our collective memory of Lindh’s case has become. Sympathetic journalists have rewritten the history, embracing him as a naive young hippie-dippie from Marin County, Calif.,who just caught in the “wrong place at the wrong time.”

Others, like Esquire magazine writer Tom Junod, have proclaimed him “innocent” and lamented Lindh’s life behind bars in a federal medium-security facility. Junod criticized the government for forbidding him to speak Arabic. (Human rights atrocity!) Meanwhile, he enjoys the privilege of cooking his meals for himself and fellow inmates, working in the library, and praying to Mecca. Junod insisted that Lindh deserves more “credit for his sense of purpose or his vast reserves of will” and more “credit for what it took to get to Afghanistan, much less what it took for him to get back to America.”

In Afghanistan, I remind you, Jihad Johnny took up arms with the terrorists. His purpose was to kill Americans and his “reserve of will” accomplished the goal. He told the feds he trained with al Qaeda before the September 11 attacks and he fought alongside them after Osama bin Laden’s henchmen murdered 3,000 of Lindh’s fellow citizens on American soil. He wrote a letter to his mother expressing support for the U.S.S. Cole bombing that took 17 sailors’ lives and, despite an emphatic denial by Lindh’s father that Jihad Johnny took up arms against his country, he recounted how his rifle malfunctioned on the front lines in Takar.

Finally, on Nov. 25, 2001, upon being captured and taken to the Qala I Jangi fortress outside Mazar E Shiref for interrogation, Suleyman al-Faris/Abdul Hamid/John Walker Lindh sat silent — and deliberately and defiantly chose not to tell American CIA officer and former Marine Corps artillery specialist Mike Spann about a planned Taliban prison revolt. Spann was killed in the riot.

Asked by journalist Robert Pelton at the prison if “this the right cause or the right place,” Lindh replied unequivocally: “It is exactly what I thought it would be.”

Who deserves the “credit” for “sense of purpose” and “reserve of will?” The saboteur of American freedom or the guardian?

Mike Spann’s family visited the fortress after his murder. They talked to Afghan doctors who will never forget his bravery. “They said they thought Mike might run and retreat, but he held his position and fought using his AK rifle until out of ammo, and then draw and begin firing his pistol,” Spann’s father said. “While watching Mike fight they were able to jump up and run to safety.

“They said the only reason that they, and several others, were able to live was because Mike stood his position and fought off the prisoners while enabling them the time to run to safety. The doctors stated that as they fled toward a safe haven they saw Mike run out of ammo and then witnessed him fighting hand to hand until he was overcome by the numerous Al Qada and Taliban prisoners.”

American hero Mike Spann will not get to cook dinner for widow Shannon and three young children. Mike Spann cannot curl up with a good book or go to church with his family. Pray for Mike Spann, show his family the compassion and gratitude they deserve — and may American traitor John Walker Lindh rot in hell.

Amen!!! Let this scumbag rot in hell for all of eternity!!!

A mistake is getting drunk and passing out in the back seat of your buddy's car while he and another guy hold up a gas station. This happened to a friend of mine and he got seven years in prison for being an accessory to an armed robbery.

Leaving your comfy home in MARIN COUNTY, WASP capitol of California, so that you can travel to Pakistan. Link up with the Taliban, an organization that had (by the time Walker got ther) racked up a long, long, list of human-rights violations. Signed up to join them and trained to fight for them... this is not an accident.

His parents are making excuses for him.
