    Default New York's "iPod Tax"

A proposed tax on online downloads isn't music to the ears of iPod-using New Yorkers.

A lot of people have accepted the .99 cents per song thing and have drifted away from the illegal downloading. Yes there are still lots of people doing the illegal thing but this type of tax is going to drive more people back to that option. Which would actually lead to an interesting thread.....if the past albums were only ever released on iTunes, which songs would you have downloaded and which ones not.

I don't know. 98+% of the music I have in my iTunes library was purchased, either through the discs I already own or through iTunes. Most of the stuff I ripped from online without paying are one off songs (B-sides, etc) that have never been made "officially" for release in a digital format, the other stuff I pick up are bootlegs.

Have no idea what I would do if music downloads were taxed, but considering I usually only pick up the odd "single" from an upcoming album to give it a listen before the album's release, I doubt it would effect me that much. If I like it, I'll buy the disc itself as I like having a hard copy of the new music; if I don't like it, I generally don't add any of the music from the new album.

You can bet that, as NY goes, so will everyone else.

To Jetguy's query, I don't know if I would only download just songs from past albums. Even in the day's of vinyl, I always bought the LP, never the single.

I was a bit vague with my inquiry....I was going on the basis that the VH albums were released in the current era and making the assumption that iTunes etc. were the only place to purchase music. Faced with, let's say Diver Down being released today...would you buy all the songs or would you you pick and choose. I can tell you Dancing in the Streets wouldn't be on my download list. Not really the thread for this one but it got me thinking. I download a fair bit from iTunes but I have yet to download a full album...it's all picking and choosing.

I getcha. I'm the opposite. I tend to download the whole album. The only songs I've picked individually have been novelty songs like Dread Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker/Heartbreak Hotel" or "Whatever" by Liam Lynch. In any case, I still get most of my music via CD as I want the non-compressed quality. If they start taxing downloads excessively, I'll be getting all my legal music at the ole' brick/mortar store.
