    It was inevitable:

    Pop:

    Bloc Party - Intimacy
A surprising release from a band I was sure was going to be a one-hit wonder
(Banquet). But they continue to evolve as an enterprising and inventive outfit.
Melodic, dynamic, tuneful, innovative, energetic - all the things great pop
    music should be.

    Hard Rock/Metal:

Bullet for My Valentine - Scream Aim Fire
I agree. Stupid name, but great band. It's so refreshing to hear a young
band that can play that DOESN'T scream their way through every song
(anymore). The dual leads are great, ditto the double-kick drums and they
are brimming with combustible energy. Love it.

    Prog:

The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath
These guys do so much with rhythm, tone, texture, concept, and vision
that I can scarcely think of anyone who even comes close to their
    awesomeness. Not this year anyway...

    Guitar:

    (Gulp) GnR - Chinese Democracy
Yeah. We all know it's an overcooked ball of cheese, but the solos and
guitar work are among the highlights of the record, each a little roller
coaster ride in it's own. Plus, it (perhaps) reintroduces shred to something
other than a purely metal audience in the best possible way. That is, in
different musical contexts and without being too indulgent.

What the heck. I'll toss my $0.02 in with no particular order or category:
    • Meshuggah - Obzen: Extreme Metal at its finest.
    • Death Angel - Killing Season: Old school Trashers with the release of their career.
    • Fred Frith - From Sail to Sail: Solo acoustic experimental guitar. One reviewer put it best by describing Frith's style as equivalent "to the guitar as to what quantum physics is to math".

Overall 2008 as far as music releases goes is a total loss.

I can't think of anything 'new' that I bought this year that I still listen to....past the few spins after I got it.

This is the year, for me anyway, that the music industry and it's lagging sales really suffered the most.

Desperate times for them...and they pin their hopes on Chinese Democracy?...or next year's U2 release...don't they remember the crap that 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb' was/is?

I disagree. Many good albums have been released this year. The new albums from Tesla, Metallica, Ac/Dc, Bullet For My Valentine... and there is plenty more

Oh yeah, I forgot Metallica. Glad to see they remembered that Kirk Hamment could play solos.

Okay...I haven't gotten the new Metallica, but after St. Anger, Load, Reload, S&M and Garage Inc. Can you really blame me?

I haven't gotten the AC/DC release either, but past Highway to Hell, Back In Black, and a few other songs I'm not a big fan.

I'm happy that 2008 was better year, musically, for you though...for me, its been pretty bad, as far as anything 'new' that is.

Heck, I even enjoyed Journey's new offering. Been a while since I could say I enjoyed three new albums in a single year.

    Motley Crue - SOLA
Rush - Snakes & Arrows Live
    AC/DC - Black Ice
    Extreme - Saudades de Rock
    Journey - Revelations

Not a bad year. Last year was a great touring year, this year was more of an albums year. Shame that I had trouble even listing five albums I liked this year

    Motley Crue - S.O.L.A.

As far as Metallica's "Death Magnetic" (or as I call it, "Death Pathetic") goes, I still say that the album was just St. Anger with guitar solos. I now know the meaning of the song "The Day Never Comes". They're referring to the day that they make good music again.
