Default Where is it this year?

Everywhere I go, I'm seeing it.
I walk into the stores, out the stores, nothing. At work, it seems to be the same...where is the Christmas spirit? People trying to be a little nicer to each other...just trying to be thoughtful...have I missed it? I hope that those reading have had better circumstances than I have. merry Christmas, VH Forums, I hope things have gone well for every one of you, and if it hasn't I hope its a better 2009 for you. -Josh aka Red43j

I don't know, but I'm with you there. I've given to numerous charities, whether that be food, money, or old clothes, just like I do every Christmas. I've shopped for all my friends and I've done all I could to be generous to people.

Of course, sometimes that cancels out when you run into the majority of assholes out there who are so bitter because they couldn't get a certain gift or can't get certain days off for the holidays. Sure, that'd piss me off too. The problem is when people take it out on other people who are trying their best to make this a great holiday.

Christmas Spirit is almost a non-existent thing these days, you'd think. Oh well...

I can honestly say that I have done more for charity this year than I ever have, and this was not a great year finacially. Times are tough for lots of people, now is the time to give.

I've been doing quite a bit more myself because I think the need is greater right now. I think the Christmas spirit is missing because people are scared to death. They are going through the motions but there is a sense of the other shoe getting ready to fall.

I'm glad theres still people out there who get it.
Its not always about presents...jeez, is it okay for people to wish one another in passing good will? I mean, its free, and as I get older, I'm beginning to appreciate it more often than not.

I don't even necessarily have the means to give, but I do it anyway. People need things more than I do right now, to be honest.

I think it has a lot to do with the times we are going through. Mom and dad are trying to figure out just how they can put anything under the tree for their child(ren) and I believe the stress level is quite high.

You can see it in the increase in requests from the Marines and their Toys for Tots program. They nearly came up short last year, and this year supposedly has at least double the requests.

I agree that it doesn't take much to put on a smile and perhaps offer a greeting, but there are times where I can personally feel how a bah-humbug attitude comes through...although I try not to let it show through.

I was feeling the same thing....scroogy year for me....but I worked the community Christmas handing out cookies and hot chocolate to the kiddies because it was a free event, and we are finding families looking for inexpensive things to do with their families.

People think that it's the buying of things that makes everything festive and it isn't so...if one good thing comes out of this, it may be that families really concentrate on making this season a family time and not make shopping a priority.

I volunteered for the upcoming christmas card sorting for Holiday Mail for Heroes and have donated to the salvation army toy drive, and food drive but I have to admit this is the first time in history that I have not "rung the bell"....just didn't feel like it.....but I'm trying, I just really wanted to be south with my family this year

To be honest I'm pretty much a selfish person except at Christmas. It makes me sad as hell to think of a child not getting presents. Thats why I do toys for tots and I buy some of my less fortunate employees turkeys so they can have a decent Christmas dinner and feed their families. I will volunteer at the Salvation army occasionally but not so much since I'm older now.

Something I noticed this year is the proliferation of requests on the "Angel" and "Star" trees in the stores this year and how simple some of the requests are this go around. This time last year, the tree was almost empty, but this year you can barely see the tree for all the little "stars" on it. I plan on trying to get a few of those stars off the tree this weekend, I mean, how can you not when the request is for something as simple as underwear, or, anything.

I think the economy is weighing on a lot of the Christmas mojo this year. Things at my work are in the dumps morally. We just laid off a bunch of folks so that has put a huge damper on things. On the personal front, however, I'm feeling it. I typically volunteer at church and make that a part of the family tradition, getting my kids to think of others by donations and volunteers. There has been a definite noticable increase in requests for assistance this year through our church. Yesterday, our pastor did a "Pulpit Call" for a local family dealing with serious economic and health issues. I was pleased that a dozen families including mine answered the call and will provide gifts, groceries, and gas cards for this family.

I believe the Christmas spirit is alive, just not at the shopping mall.

I usually try to do a few of the star each year, but this year I had shied away from it given our own budget problems. Mrs VHR was, well, a bit disappointed in that, so we decided to wait and see what, if any, bonus there will be this year. If no bonus, we'll do two or three of them, if there is a bonus, we've planned to use roughly half of it on knocking some of those stars off that tree. It's the least we can do given the times in which we live right now.

I thought it was just me. It doesn't feel like Christmas this year for some reason. Maybe b/c times are more lean than last year.

I'm still waiting for it to feel like Christmas. Going through the motions is right.
