    Default VHIII-What could have been

I was in the process of moving and packing stuff up and came across an old disc at this point called VHIII. What the hell was this crap I thought to myself and I put it in. I have to say this album was close to being the hagar era's FAir Warning. I know I will get laughed at for saying that but the music on this disc is actually really good and forboding and dark. You can tell by the sound of Eddie's guitar and how low it is, that Eddie was pissed off. Just something was missing and all the pieces weren't there.... It was released at the wrong time or something.... That's life and Van Halen for the most part and they just couldn't put it all together here for whatever reasona nd personal things going on with Eddie and the band.... When Hagar left VH really was on the cusp of creating some of their best and most dark stuff with hagar. Human's being and Crossing over are both excellent dark, harsh songs. It just never happened.

Here is the very last post you made (less than a year ago):

Maybe they shouldn't have been so quick to cast off Gary? Eddie and the entire band sounded great during III. That much is true.

Am I the only one that hates the idea that they may have "been on the cusp of creating some of their best and most dark stuff"? No offense, but screw 'dark' stuff. Van Halen was always about partying and fun shit. One dark album (Balance, which I love) was enough for me, thanks. And while FW is considered 'dark' it never struck me that way as much as it apparently is. Certainly not in comparison to Balance.

VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

VH3 is on of those albums I break out once or twice a year. I personally think it had some good songs but the production was horrible. It could have been worse, not much though.

I agree that the production was pretty bad on it. There are some good songs on it but I think if they had a better producer, it certainly would've improved the sound.

Its been said plenty in varying manners by others before but: The lack of a creative counterpoint to Eddie was the undoing of III. Even on the album solely produced by the band, OU812, they were more of a cohesive group and I'm sure Sammy was the counterbalance. On III, the producer was nothing more than a knob-twiddler.

And given the result, apparently a deaf one.

There is very little good melody on VHIII.

Yes there is some impressive guitar playing, but the songs as a whole lack structure, there are almost no catchy hooks on the entire record, Gary Cherone sounds absolutely horrible and the production values compare to Youtube demos by garage bands.

    But besides that it's great....
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

    Can't disagree with that.

Plus the lyrics to Fire in the Hole........3 words......WTF

Had Sammy or Dave sung on that tune it would have KICKED SOME SERIOUS ASS!

My favorite song off the album is Year to the day. To me it just rocks. The guitar is mean plus the solo is jaw dropping. I would somehow like to hear the song that Sammy and Ed had that was the foundation of the song.

I dunno. I actually like VH3. There are somethings I think could be a lot better such as Mike's harmonies and a little more structure. But I still enjoy it a lot.
