    Default 2008-2009 NCAA BASKETBALL

The BIG 12 has dominated California, with TEXAS defeating UCLA, and OU defeating USC.

    It's early, I know.... but I like to gloat while I can . . .

Texas has the pieces in place to compete for the Big 12 title and a run toward Detroit. The Longhorns have a big-time scorer in Abrams (31 points vs. UCLA), a tough matchup in wing Damion James (a double-double with 13 points and 13 boards), a defender and capable guard in Justin Mason (six assists, one turnover and three steals), a shooting big man in Connor Atchley (both his field goals in five attempts were 3s) and a rotation of rebounders in Dexter Pittman, Gary Johnson and Clint Chapman.

With such a loaded nonconference slate and the disadvantage of this season's Big 12 South scheduling format -- Texas plays Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas A&M twice, while Kansas plays each of those conference title contenders only once -- the Longhorns may have the toughest overall schedule come March. That's what Barnes is predicting when Selection Sunday arrives.

Holding off UCLA at home, even in early December, is a win the Longhorns needed to prove they are a serious threat to make a run to Detroit.

    Watching Memphis\G-Town go into overtime.

I don't know what people think of him, but I like Clark Kellogg doing the games and not hearing Packer anymore. I'm sure some will disagree. But not hearing Packer (not to mention his pro-ACC groveling) actually makes me want to watch AND listen to the game more.

I am not questioning his knowledge of the game. I just got tired of his holier-than-thow slants (IMO) on everything that is college basketball.

Kellogg is refreshing to listen to as opposed to Packer.

USC lost at Oregon State tonight...ending OSU's 23-game conference losing streak.

I went to the Oregon-USC game the other day. The Trojans looked pretty good then.

    Finally, this thread is up!!!

After reading about USC, Oklahoma, Florida and the other football powerhouses, I can get in these conversations with my UConn Huskies.

UConn will be good this year. Final Four? Only if they play spirited, team ball.
Their loss to G-Town last week was horrible.

I'm almost happy the Tarheels lost to BC, for the simple fact that the hype of a potential undefeated season is now over.

I'd rather them not be ranked number one, as well.

However, I will not accept anything less than another championship banner in the rafters this year.

LSU has one loss so far. Granted, we have squeaked by in state cup cake teams. The only solice I have is the dipshit coach we had last year was finally shown the door. Hopefully Johnson can build a decent program. The SEC, as a whole, is down this year. Only Tennessee is ranked, if I'm not mistaken. Do I think LSU could compete w/the big boys of b'ball? No, but it is far better than where they were this time last year.

Oregon State coach Craig Robinson got a phone call from President-elect Barack Obama after ending OS's nearly two-year conference loss streak -

    http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindbea..._over_usc.html

TUESDAY morning, Valley Center ... aside from all of the back-slapping and all of the congratulations, and the free beer at Applebees when he went out to dinner, there was an added bonus for OSU coach Craig Robinson after the Beavers snapped a 21-game Pac-10 losing streak and beat USC in overtime. ... a call from the next President of the United States.

Robinson said he got a call from his brother-in-law, President-elect Barack Obama, on Monday.

"He calls after all my big games, he has always done that - even before he was a big-time politician,'' said Robinson.

"I was running some errands, and the phone rings. I know when he calls, because it comes up funny (on his cell phone) ... and he said, 'congratulations, I heard you won a big game. I didn't see it, but some of the guys saw it. Tell me about it, what happened?' "

Robinson had stuff to do, but he couldn't get Obama off the phone.

I mean, would you cut the next President short? "I talked to him for like 20 minutes,'' said Robinson, who admitted he was thinking, in the back of his mind, why do you care? Do you really care about this? ... he was very excited for us.''

Obama, a lefty shooter just like OSU's Calvin Haynes, doesn't second-guess his brother-in-law, but he doesn't mind talking X's and O's.

"We've talked about strategy before,'' said Robinson. He said 'were you guys down three?' And I said yeah, down three, 14 seconds left. And he said, 'why didn't they foul you?' Because he knows that's what I normally do. And I said to him, 'he (USC coach Tim Floyd) was trying to get his guys to foul. They just didn't foul quick enough and we passed it to our open guy and he made the shot.' ... so he knows the game.''

Robinson appreciated the holler from Obama, because he figures his brother-in-law has a lot more important things on his mind right now - like the U.S. economic crisis, the mess in Gaza, etc. ... "he's so busy right now, I was surprised he called,'' said Robinson. "I figured this would be the one time he didn't call, but sure enough. ... my family always calls, but he calls on the bigger games, so this was pretty big.''

Robinson, as he said weeks ago, will attend the Inauguration ceremonies in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 20. He will fly to the Bay Area the next day and meet the team before the Cal game.

If the players seemed more alert today, maybe it had something to do with coach Rob switching practice to 7 a.m. (from 5 a.m.) this week, as a reward for taking down the Trojans. ... coach Rob said the team will work out at 7 as long as they deserve to work out at 7. .. meaning, I guess, that the 5 a.m. workouts could be re-instated at any time.

    Now that's pressure.

Robinson said he couldn't believe the reaction he got in the hours after the 62-58 win.

He said "every single person'' at McMenamins came over to say something.

Later, having dinner with his wife at Applebees, coach Rob said, "the bartender bought us our beer.''

He got a congratulatory call from OSU football coach Mike Riley, who watched excitedly as Roeland Schaftenaar buried that game-tying three at the end of regulation.

Robinson also got a "way to go'' call from UCLA coach Ben Howland, which he appreciated.

There were "16 or 17'' phone messages on his office phone right after the game.

Robinson said that on Tuesday, there were 84 email or text messages on his cell phone.
