    Default Spalted Maple Veena

I had no idea when I started how much I was going to like this. 1-piece Alder Back w/Spalted Maple Cap. I seperatied the two woods visually by doing a black binding that I trimmed down to just over 1mm. I had discussed originally using a veneer between them, but I was concerned that the black dye would bleed, so we decided this was the best way to go. I like the way the lines in the cap run into the binding.

    Here's the neck blank:

That is the kitties titties man!!! I don't know jack about wood so much but does the grain on the spalted maple make it more brittle or does it just look that way?

man that looks gorgeous...I've never cared much for the hockey stick headstock myself, but the BODY...jeez...that looks awesome. Are you going to stain it? If so what color? I usually don't get crazy about colors but with that awesome grain, that would look great with a real deep red or blue...but to leave it natural would just be stunning too...keep us posted!

I've never been complimented with "kitties titties" so thanks!
The Spalted Maple is more brittle than other choices, but when it's finished properly it'll be as durable as anything else. It's going to get a natural finish becasue I don't want to lose any of the contrast in the cap. I considered using a color, but talked myself and the customer out of it.
My site is being upgraded and updated as we speak.
Unfinished body like this would be $400 and that's a 1-piece Alder back with the Spalted Maple cap and seperating binding.

Thanks Dive! You looking to get rid of any Floyd Roses? I know you had some for sale on the site earlier.

I don't have them listed anymore, but I still sell them. $189, $199, and $209 (chrome, black, and gold).

That guitar looks GREAT! A nice natural stain or even a shade or two dark stain is all that thing needs.

In my selfish opinion, it would be a travesty for you to match that guitar with THAT headstock/neck. But if it works for you...

I think the lines of the headstock flow perfectly with the lines of the body.

Actually, from the black/white outline...yeah, I gotta agree with you.

HOWEVER, with THAT stunning of a spalted cap, the seemingly rather plain headstock is throwing it off.

Any chance of making a small spalted cap for the headstock? That might tie together the two pieces together better.

Regardless...that is going to be one INCREDIBLE guitar!

(and it's making me want to get started on my latest "perfect guitar" build)

I tried making a veneer from the Spalted Maple. it was really brittle and impossible to work with.

Just curious, did you cut out that body with a band saw, or did you route it out of the blank from a template? Then I am assuming that you used a roundover router bit for the edges right?

I rough cut it with a bandsaw and then used a template and router. I'm looking at a larger machine to use instead of a router that I hope to buy early next year.
