Default Eddie Van Halen WOLFGANG SPECIAL

i guess i want to start this by asking if this guitar is really worth the money some are asking for it, is it just a knock off to the real wolfgangs out there or is it a true evh guitar here is one i am checking out:

    Ebony Finish
    Bolt-on oil-finished, birdseye maple neck
    22 frets
2 humbucking pickups designed to Edward Van Halen's specifications
    Master volume, tone
    3-way pickup selector
    Peavey/Floyd Rose-licensed double-locking tremolo with D-Tuna

the thing i don't understand is it says "volume/tone knob", well we all know that the master doesn't believe in tone knobs, so what gives?? i know you all are the best out there so lets have it!!!!
I used to wonder why he was grinning all the time(Michael Ian Black talkin about EVH on VH1 I love the 80's) but then i realized the reason he's grinning is because he's Eddie F*#king Van Halen

    it could be a "push/pull" volume/tone pot.

That is an easy one. The volume knob has always been considered a " tone" knob. Buy the U.S. version .

That is the spec of the Wolfgang archtop (the more expensive model), not the Special. The Special doesn't have the birdseye maple neck and it only has a volume knob. The archtop has both a volume and a tone knob- yes, despite Eddie saying he doesn't need a tone knob.

    Correct.

The USA Wolfgang Specials are excellent. They only cut costs on things that matter almost nothing at all when it comes to playability and tone. (No arch top, no body binding, hard rock maple neck instead of birdseye...) The hardware is the same, the pickups are the same, the wood selection is the same, the exact same people made them in the exact same factory as the standard models. It really was an excellent business model that you just don't find from guitar manufacturers anymore.

USA Wolfgang Specials are WAY down in price on eBay right now. It's a good time to buy.

Stay away from the Korean-made EXPs. There you will find they sacrificed quality in parts and craftsmanship.

I most certainly agree, since I have an ivory-colored '98 Special in minty shape.

I agree as well. I have a gloss-black special, and it plays as good or better than anything I've played, including guitars that are more expensive.

I was always surprised that the Wolfgang Special flame top models never really took off. They were a nice bridge between the standard models and the Specials. Even now--despite being the rarest production version of the Wolfgang aside from first-year quilts--they still don't fetch very high prices in the used market. I think the cheapie-veneer top EXPs kind of hosed the market for the Special flame tops.

AT, love the green one! I don't know why but most people seem to hate the green ones. I always liked 'em.

Thanks! The green one is a gem--excellent player. The cherryburst Custom Shop one is of course very nice (I have yet to play a Custom Shop Wolf that isn't), and the red one I reassembled from parts after the original owner parted it out on eBay. The amber one is going to be for sale in January; it's a nice Wolfie, but I never really connected with it and need to raise some funds right now.

Yep, to my eye, the green ones and tobacco burst ones are the two best-looking finishes on the wolfies.

The absolute best PV wolf was the original white special. Really elegant and understated looking. Just needed a birdseye neck though...

I'm just being a show-off. I went crazy on the Wolfgangs for a few years there. Now that financial reality is kicking in, I'm going to have to move a few of them. An amber flame top Special, a purple flame top standard, and a black Special are all set to be sold. That'll bring the number down to 16, which is still ridiculous. But they do all get played.

Actually, I'm about to start a Wolfgang replica project that will be Tru-Oil finished like several of the other custom guitars I've done. I have a Frankenstraat birdseye neck standing by, and the body will be mahogany with a spalted maple top. The pickups and Floyd will be stock Peavey Wolfgang.
