Default Did anyone fear something was wrong in early '94?

Am I the only one who cant remember seeing any news in late 93/early 94 that Ed Leffler died. It was'nt till "Unboxed" came out that I found out about it. It was'nt in any of the rock or metal magazines at all, and even weirder "Unboxed" came as a shock. I did'nt expect that either. That seemed to be hush hush too. I remember a mate calling me one night saying that Sammys on "Dave Letterman" singing a new song (solo), and then on "E.T" Sammy was singing "Honkytonk woman" with Melissa Etheridge. I dont know how others felt at this time, but I knew something was wrong in early '94. I had this "gut" feeling when "Balance" came out, that it was the last album with Sammy. Thats why I've always called "Balance" the "bonus" album, cause, in my opinion, we were to lucky to get it.

I remember an interview with Ed in the Inside from around Balance (I think the 1st or 2nd issue) where Ed was talking about the future...he said somethign similar to: "I know Al and I will always be here, I'm pretty sure Mike will and hopefully Sammy." That always stuck me as odd and I remember thinking "that doesn't sound good"

The first indication (to me) was the issue of Guitar World with Ed on the cover sporting short hair and a goatee. I nearly did not buy the issue, as I did not recognize the guy. The interview itself was a little bit...off, as well.

Then the album came out, and the promo pictures in the CD store (as well as the album itself) seemed so damned somber. The chanting monks on the opening track coupled with all of the filler didn't help much, either.

I dunno, the whole joyless package seemed to lead one to the unmistakable conclusion that things were coming to a halt.

I thought the Balance disk was a step - finally - in the right direction. Ed on edge, back to dark Fair Warning depths, Sam stepped up the lyricism (with the exception of Amsterdam).

For me, it started looking bleak with that damned Twister soundtrack, even though one of its songs was one of Sam and Ed's best collaborations ever.

In retrospect, the Humans Being video kind of looks as if all things are not happy in the Van Halen camp.

In retrospect as well, I thought the show I saw was maybe the best I had ever heard them sound live, but they had about zero energy, which was in sharp contrast to prior shows.

But I really didn't know anything was wrong until the radio and internet rumors that Sam was gone and Dave was in. And then Mitch, and then so and so, and then Gary....

Guess I was out of the loop, cause I didn't know anything until I heard on the radio Sam was out. I saw em in 1995 and they played great. Nothing seemed wrong with their stage presence from what I recall. I did not use the internet much in 95,96 so didn't get any info there. Too bad, cause I miss that lineup as a band.

When 'Unboxed' came out, they had said it was put because Sammy had a requirement to fill with the record label for his solo stuff.

When 'Balance' came out, it was kind of shock with Ed's look and the direction the band took which was basically everywhere. That album had a lot of different sides of VH musically.

Balance certainly had the potential to be a great. Unfortunately, most of it wasn't.

Big time. If they'd cut Not Enough and CSLY, added Crossing Over and Humans Being, it would've been Van Hagar's magnum opus. The tone and production on Balance was their best yet with Sammy.

I would leave off Amsterdam & replace it with Crossing Over and Not Enough, replace it with Humans Being.
When I heard the album premiere and Eddie was complaining about the lyrics to Amsterdam I thought; 'Oh, oh.'
Then, during the tour, he and Mikey rode in one limo while the brothers rode in another, claiming it was the brothers smoking that bothered him. Could be, but that raised some alarm bells. And Eddie's comment before Balance that Sammy was off somewhere doing his fucking looney solo tour.
Things that make you go ummm...

I'm truly surprised that among the tunes people have suggested dropping, no one has mentioned "Big Fat Money". To me it sounds like an uninspired three chord yawn, the type of throwaway tune used to fill time on an album the same way a cover tune is used to pad out a stage show.

Replace it with a completed version of "Crossing Over", get rid of the dumb sound effects nonsense, tweak the running order and you'd have an album nearly scrutiny-free, excepting the odd lyric here and there.

I never, ever got the Amsterdam hate. Who cares if the lyrics are terrible? I don't listen to Van Halen for lyrical inspiration.
