    Default Learning to See

First, thanks to Chefcraig for turning me on to this guy's YouTube channel.

Second, major props to Sphen (the creator of the clip) for his work.

Last, everyone should check out this clip. It's an overlooked gem from the short Hagar reunion (pretty powerful tune, I think), but check out how the maker fades into the live sound at the conclusion of the song.

    Good stuff.

The verse sections of this song are truly what could have been had Sam stayed with Ed and Al in 2004. So sad.

The choruses are great too but the guitar seems to be ALL over the place. Had it been a bit more structured we would have had a REAL GEM on our hands.

Yeah. Ed had a tendency around that time to overplay and not let a song breathe. Even on "It's About Time," there are parts in the chorus that just distract the listener from the rest of the song. In concert, he would overplay simple riffs from classic songs, strumming more than he should and adding all sorts of random crap. I'm glad we didn't see that in the last tour.

I gotta say that I really like this tune, I listen to it all the time now for some reason it's really grown on me. I do agree that it's all over the place at times but it works for this song. this was the first tune they did when they got back together and it's easily the best of the 3, I always think they got along during this song, then on IAT things started to unravel and on UFB it had gone to shit....

On that song and live on the 2004 tour (most of it), Ed was basically playing like a guy who had a strong buzz going.

I've jammed with a good buzz going and when you play you really don't care WHAT you play. It's really cool. But as proven by Ed on the 2004 Tour, it sounds like shit.

well ed was probably buzzed 90% of the time he went on stage with Dave and with Sam up until 95, the thing was he was so f'n good he could play that way and throw shit in the middle of a song and it would fit, on the 04 tour it finally caught up with him and his noodling was totally out of hand, instead of being cool it just gets annoying after a bit. The last show of that tour was so bad, I think it's the begining of ATBL, Ed's just noodling forever and it just sounded like shit, he was embarrasing that whole tour.

I've always dug this tune...easily the best of the 3 on BOBW....sadly someone ripped off this CD from my classroom, and I won't ever buy it again.

Let's also not forget that the guy hadn't been on stage in six years and likely wasn't playing the guitar as often as he did up until '98. He was out of practice, winged it, and lost a lot of the techniques he once could do very easily. Still, his substance abuse was the main reason for his noodling. He couldn't keep time, forgot simple chords, and "covered" his mistakes horribly. Some of those shows are beyond embarrassing. It was such a relief to get the real EVH back in April '08!

It is the best of three very average to sub-par songs on BOBW.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!
