Default Stuff I've Learned The Last Few Weeks In Marine Biology Labs

I'm down to the last few weeks of the semester and things are cruising. The best part of the Marine Biology class is the lab because we aren't always IN a lab. Often we are down at the ocean doing stuff. One week we went out and did a Marine Mammal survey where we counted Harbor Seals, Elephant Seals and Otters. We also had to observe a single Sea Lion and write down everything he/she did for fifteen minutes. Later we put all that on a graph which showed that Sea Lions spend much of their time scratching themselves.

Another lab sent us down to the beach where we took sand samples from the upper beach and near the surf-line at two different depths. We then filtered the sand with fresh water and seperated the samples into bottles. We then went back to the lab and broke out the microscopes. You'd be amazed at the thousands of creatures that live among the sandgrains. There were all kinds of Flatworms and Nematodes just cruising around in our samples.

Two weeks ago we went to the Abalone Farm ( yes, the same one that was featured on "Dirty Jobs") and got a first hand look at a cool little operation. Abalones are cool, they aren't slimey and feel cool in your hand. Bonus, they look like a Vagina which added to the giggle factor. It was even more cool because the Sea Lions would pop up a few feet away and give us a look-over.

This past week we went to the Tuna Research center at Hopkins Marine Station (Stanford). Met a scientist half my age from New Zealand who gave us a detailed briefing on the research conducted there. They had four huge tanks, two had schools of Blue Fin and Yellow Fin Tuna. The third tank had like 11 baby Hammer Head sharks (no-fricken lasers though). I have to admit that this was a very impressive place where cutting edge research is happening.

Don't eat Blue Fin Tuna. Chances are that they're extinct within 60 years or sooner.

Next week we go out to MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) which is only second to Skywalker Ranch on the cool scale.

I'll say it again, if there's a college or Junior College near by - TAKE A SCIENCE CLASS! Seriously, even if you had science in high school or back when you were in college in the 1980s, take a class anyway. Science progresses and things had changed so much from my 1980 Marine Bio class in highschool and today's class. Example: In 1980 it was Kingdom>Phylum>Genous>Species. in 2008 it's : Kingdom>Phylum>Class>Order>Genous>Species. What changed? DNA & RNA make identification and classification more exact than in the past.

There's a cool world out there and you're missing out. Plus there's college chicks!

This is Hopkins Marine Station, I took this shot during the Marine Mammal survey. It is ground zero for my family as my grandfather was sent down to Monterey to get Hopkins up and running for Stanford back in the early 1920s.

This was my target subject for the Marine Mammal observation. He was huge.

The gang down at Weston Cove at Point Lobos during our tide-pool survey.

This is a Skulpin giving me the stink-eye during the survey. He wasn't in our selected site so he wasn't counted and I guess he had an attitude about it. He was on the large side for his species, around 10 inches long.

I feel sorry for college students who take Marine Biology in the Mid-West.

Thank you very much! Whales are just so much more majestic than fish. How'd you know they were Costa Rican? Did they speak Spanish?

In the eastern Pacific, Humpbacks mate off of Costa Rica so those are their native waters. Plus, they tag them with tracking devices.
