Default Computer problem question (regarding deleted file)

Little advice: when you have an important Word document that you've been working on for years, don't save it when you're buzzed. So I'm transferring my VH bootleg collection of cassettes (250+) to CD, and on my computer I have everything listed on a file (every show and every song in order, etc.) that I have updated to CD so I know what I burned and what I didn't yet. I went out of my way to not lose this information by saving it both in my folder and on hard disk (have older computer). I'm almost 100% done after years of updating this thing, so one night I'm drinking and I go to save this one file I have called "VHPICTURES" and apparently went out of my way to do the opposite and erased my other file. When saving it to my folder, I accidentally typed in the title of the document (when all you have to do is click "Save" because it's already typed in for you) and typed in a different document name, "VHBOOTCOLL" (the big file I erased). Then, like an anus, I do it again on my disk drive. Now, I have two documents of the same thing, and neither contain what I erased. It's like I "taped over it." Now, the contents of "VHBOOTCOLL" and "VHPICTURES" have the contents of "VHPICTURES." Follow me?

So, I naturally went to the bottom left-hand side of my screen and did a search for that document and nothing. Then, looked at "Recent Documents" and nothing again. I called the actual HP hotline and even my IT place at work (said it was work-related) and they all said the same thing: it's gone. When I did a search in my files I fortunately found one file of this document for some strange reason that was from December (75% of it and somewhat updated). But everything I put in from January on is history, and I'm completely lost without it as to what I burned and what I didn't burn. I also tried a System Restore and did some other some guy I work with told me to do where you can go back to a certain and retrieve any and every file, but I have Windows '98, which really helps in that it makes it harder to dig up lost or deleted documents.

Now I wouldn't feel right if I didn't give it one more try. Any help? God bless ya if you can.

I believe you friend was speaking of a system restore point, rather than a simple system restore, which if activated will allow you to go back to a certain date before you made any changes. It really requires some effort to get it working, though. Have you tried searching (in the help section of) Windows '98 for any options or how to work with it? Look, I'm no expert at all, yet it has worked for me (after a bit if struggle) with Vista.

Try finding it and good luck to ya.

Restore won't do it for you. Try this:

Yeah, it was a "point" now that I think about it. He told me where to find that on the computer but my old piece-a-shit didn't even have that option. I found it on my parents' computer though, which doesn't help me too much. And I definitely spent quite a bit of time searching in the help section, but nothing doing. Thanks though.

That looks like exactly what I'm looking for. The only problem is that--did I mention I don't have the Internet? As much as I use it and have used it in the past 10+ years, I actually don't have access except for work and my parents' house. I guess I could download it here onto a disc and then put it on my piece of shit computer, right?

And I wonder if that works for files where you accidentally saved something over it, and not just ones you deleted?
