    Default 80's Heavy Metal Guitars

    Hi.

Just wondering what your opinion are iconic guitars for 80's heavy metal?

I guess a couple could be Ibanez & Fender Strats w/floyd's.

    What do you think?
One noticeable difference between Judas Priest and Metallica...
...Judas Priest only has one gay guy in the band.

    Kramer Barretta
    Ibanez JEM
    Jackson Soloist
    Charvel Model 2
    Jackson RR
    Kramer Voyager

I would also put the Flying V in there as well. Euro bands liked them and while Randy's Sandoval was not a Gibson, it had the Flying V shape.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and pick one iconic guitar from the 80's.

Although all the guitars I metnioned in my above post were all very popular then, I would have to say that the ultimate 80s metal guitar was the Jackson Soloist.

After looking back, I seem to remember that everyone wanted a Jackson Custom Shop guitar. Most people couldn't afford one, so they settled on a Kramer or a B.C. Rich. They were still expensive by that era's standards, but were more widely available.

Ibanez wasn't really a big name in metal guitars until the JEM, which was the late 80s. My memory is that the Fender Strats were kind of considered "old-timer" guitars by most metal players. I also remember people trading in their Les Paul Customs for Kramer Barrettas. ESP wasn't really a bigger name until the late 80s/early 90s.

If you had a Jackson Soloist, you were the shit.

I have a small collection of Fender Heartfields, which i think are some of the best metal guitars ever..

the Talons were (obviously) designed at the same time as the Ibanez RG's by the same people, same fuijugen factory.

I'd say the iconic metal guitar would be a BC Rich or Kramer of any pointy head variety.

The Charvels (forgive me Wayne, Jennifer, and Michael) made really nice guitars for the most part, but they were the ones people settled for if they could not afford a Kramer. (and I'm still waiting for that custom guitar you promised me in 1991!)

Here are my remaining 80's Kramer shredders:

I would say that any Jackson, Charvel, B.C. Rich or Kramer is an iconic '80s hair metal guitar. You could not hardly give away a Les Paul in the '80s, and '60s Fenders were regularly getting sacrificed to the Lord Floyd Rose. I remember seeing a '58 335 dot getting Gumby inlays and a Kahler. What an idiot that fellow was!!!

I loved Fender Heavy Metal Strats and Teles from the day- nice, Ibanez-built machines with a very interesting answer to the Floyd Rose. Cool pickups, as well...
Dammit!!! I still smell like cotton candy!!!
