    Default Band Wreckers

    http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/get...-they-destroy/

Anyone see this yet? One of the headlines of Yahoo news.

I]Band Wreckers and the Happy Bands They Destroy
Posted Thu Nov 20, 2008 5:30am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack
Band wreckers are the worst kind of singers. They are those dudes who take advantage of an unstable group relationship and insert themselves in the middle. They break into a band and destroy their happy home. And who suffers? The children do. The children always suffer. All of those fans whose childhood memories of beloved bands are forever dashed by seeing step-singers replace their favorite vocalists.

These interlopers may take their hijacked groups to new commercial heights, but it's always a Pyrrhic victory. Their success is without honor. In most cases, however, the band wrecker gets to travel with his eloped bandmates on the road to career oblivion and package tours at county fairgrounds. It's a fate they deserve for cheating in the first place. Cheaters never win. You hear that, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones? You can't replace Robert Plant. A band makes a promise that's as deep as a marital vow: 'til death do us part. Remember that before you decide to hit the road with the winner of some Led Zeppelin sound-a-like contest.

In fairness, I have to blame the band too. It takes two to make a thing go right — or wrong. These bands know better and so should their second-rate frontman replacements. So, here are the worst band wreckers ever. They all have a special place in rock hell reserved for them. A place where hack tribute groups play all day and Barry Manilow plays all night.

    VAN HALEN with SAMMY HAGAR
Van Halen are serial cheaters. First they broke up with David Lee Roth for Sammy Hagar. Then they cheated on Sammy for Gary Cherone. THEN they bring back Diamond Dave but boot bassist Michael Anthony. The Sammy affair is the most painful, though. It's like seeing an ex-spouse make a bunch of money after you split. [/I]

I just read that as well. I don't think Sammy wrecked the band. The band itself is a wreck. Sammy was just along for the bumpy ride.

I don't think Sammy wrecked the band either. I like VH with Sam - I like it with Dave as well.
The serial cheater part cracked me up, though.

Absolutely. Don't know how it could be viewed any other way.

Seriously, anyone who doesn't think 5150 was a great album (comeback with a new singer or otherwise) is on crack.

OU812 was more rushed in mixing and mastering (and the fact that Don Landee had clearly blown out his hi-mids in his ears since it's heavy in those frequencies) but still pretty good.

I've said this in other threads but does anyone notice how Ed's tone got more hi-mid range in the late 80's and forward? I think, like Landee's, his ears burned out those frequencies so they were pushed in the mix.

There's no way that Ed's hearing is still as good that what he thinks is a good tone is what everyone else will. The drummer in my band can barely hear hi-hats on a song due to his hearing loss.

Something to think about when analyzing VH album tones.

I actually saw this article last night when I was surfing the 'Net looking for some new tubes for my Vox. Sammy the band wrecker...hah!

"The shit I read on this site." -- Dave's Dreidel (Nov 6th, 2013)

"Don't ever confuse talent with fame." -- Bob Lefsetz

"There's very little greatness in this world, but in the crucible of quality there's a special corner reserved for Van Halen." -- Bob Lefsetz

I jumped on to post the article and low and behold...I can always count on you guys to get here first!

I agree, Sam didn't wreck the band, the band was and is a wreck in and of itself. However, the bumpy road he drove them on wasn't the prettiest, as far as musical output...I too must be on crack because 5150 is a steaming pile of crap and OU812 is right down there with it.

They did however redeem themselves with FUCK and Balance so the Sammy years were pretty much a push.

    (ducking for cover)

...hey, I almost never "go there." So cut a brother some slack!

What a stupid article. The VH stuff aside, how were INXS, Queen, or The Doors "destroyed"? None of those bands had done anything for years before replacing their deceased singers. You could certainly make a case that those bands tarnished their names, but I don't see how you could destroy a defunct group that had no chance to ever fully reunite anyway.

As for the VH stuff, that's certainly been discussed to death. Personally, I would love for a singer to destroy my band by maintaining its popularity through millions of albums sold and sold out tours, but that's just me.

It is a stupid article...and yeah I too would love someone to wreck my band by selling millions of records and taking me on tour around the world...

Yahoo blogs have never really been the epitome of intelligience and insight though so it's really neither here nor there...
