    Default Slash's Les Paul

    Hey Guys,
There isn't a lot of discussion on Les Pauls here much, so I don't know what kind of reaction this will get. I've always been into EBMM EVH and Axis, but I also am kinda into Les Paul standards. I think being a fan of Slash more these days has something to do with it. He has a new Goldtop LP. Anyone tried it? I've never tried any of his guitars, both Fender and Gibson signature guitars seem like goofy, way over priced ideas. I was curious about the neck profile. He says the are narrow, but rounded. This sounds very appealing to me! Any thoughts? Sounds like custom electronics too. It just seems there might be a little more to this sig LP than most...?

By "little more" do you actually mean a LOT more in price? Here's an idea Gibson loves to exploit... Take an already over-priced guitar, attach an established artist's name to it, add a couple of "custom" features, and sell it for twice the price! Brilliant!

There are MUCH better guitars out there for the cashola they want for that Slash LP. (There are much better guitars out there for HALF the price of that Slash LP.)

I generally don't ever try to mask my disgust wit the Gibson business model.

the only "real" difference is the pickups (alnico somethings) you also get a longer neck tenon, which according to slash makes some difference but to my ears it still sounds like a regular LP, you also get a piezo system, which is nothing more than a gimmick....to be honest you'd be better off buying a regular les paul, i tried a new 2008 standard the other day (with the asymetrical neck profile burstbucker pro's and improved electrics and plek setup) and i have to admit that its the closest ive ever come to (almost) liking a les paul.
if it were my money though i'd opt for a PRS singlecut (satin) or maybe hold on till the new wolf finally surfaces.

just my 2cents, try one and make up your own mind.

or maybe try the epiphone version, its half the price but according to reviews ive read its a lot more than half the guitar.

Ahh, there is an asymmetrical neck design? That's kinda cool. I would never buy a signature model, they are way over priced. LP's are overpriced as it is...

I have a 58 Gibson Les Paul Standard, and a 2004 Epiphone Les Paul Standard.

They play identically, sound identical. Only difference is the smell (the 58 has an amazing vintage wood smell to it), the weight (Epiphone is heavier), and the headstock.

Save the $$, get an Epiphone and have a grand or more left over to buy other goodies.

I played them both (Epi & Gibson Slash) at GC when they came out. I'm not a Les Paul expert, but I didn't see, feel, or hear a hell of a lot of difference between the two. They both felt like foreign objects to me, as I play Wolfgangs and Strats w/Folyd Roses, but they're very pretty to look at. The Epi had a little glossier finish, but it seemed like everything else was pretty much the same. The spec sheets are pretty much the same. So, as usual, with the Epi, you pay for what you actually get. With the Gibson, you pay for what you get, plus another 300% for the Gibson name & headstock.

What is the situation with the tops on the Epi LPs? Are they a thick maple cap with a figured veneer? Or are they simply solid mahogany bodies with a figured veneer? Do they make any Epi LPs with a truly thick, figured maple top?

I'm not sure about the top. Based on the fact they are a contoured top, I think it's pretty hard to use a veneer on that? I also guess they would based on that they sound extremely similar to their more expensive counterpart. Not having a thick cap would have an affect on sound...

Totally agree with Andrew. As far as Pauls though, I do gotta say, I tried one of the Smart Wood Series ash Pauls, and holeeeeee-fuck was it the shit soundwise and playing wise. Absolutely the best sounding Paul I think I've ever heard or played. I was very close to picking it over my current Gibby SG, but I noticed a couple manufacturing flaws that made me a little leary. The first was a screw missing on the selector cover. Not just missing but not even drilled, which means it got by at least two people on the line, and the other thing was the binding was not sanded flush in spots, which means A; it was indeed not flushsanded or B; it was separating from the body. Just cause it's got Slash's name on it don't make it any more special a guitar. QC is QC, and if they are not catching mistakes on a three thousand dollar guitar as it is, I would'nt feel any more confident shelling out another one or two thou, just to have that sig. A buddy of mine just got a real nice '83 flame top Standard off of Craigslist. Now he paid 2,500 for it, but it was in great condition, and as he put it he has a "real" Gibson. You look at it's finish and wood selection and your jaw drops at the workmanship.
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.
